Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

By SBI SOCCER

Juventus has a much different look than the team that nearly won a treble last season, but Bianconeri are still considered the favorites to repeat as Serie A champions.

One of the teams expected to try and stop Juve’s run at a repeat is AS Roma, which takes on the reigning champions today in Rome. Juventus suffered a season-opening loss last week, while Roma also dropped points, settling for a tie against Verona. Those results make Sunday’s clash even more important.

In England, Manchester United puts its unbeaten record on the line against Swansea City. The Swans have yet to lose in three matches as well, and will be hoping home-field advantage can provide an edge against the Red Devils, who come in off an impressive win in the UEFA Champions League.

In Spain, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid square off in a clash of UEFA Champions League sides. The two teams will be in a fierce competition this year for a place in one of the league’s Champions League spots, making Sunday’s match very important.

In MLS, a pair of juicy rivalry clashes headline, with Portland traveling to Seatttle and D.C. United making the trip up I-95 to take on the New York Red Bulls.

  1. Did I hear correctly that DMB picked up an injury?
    Brek still out
    Fabian and Chandler out
I wonder if the door opens back up for Castillo or Robbie Rogers
Gotta figure Yedlin and Evans on the right-Maybe another midfield spot opens up…depending on where Cameron goes….
Ugh, with all these injuries and variables of selection for the NT and Olympics and MLS and teams maybe not releasing people…
Looks like I picked the wrong month to stop sniffing glue

  2. It sucks Dempsey left europe. He was the “chosen one” to unite the force, not to destroy it.

    • I thought you were spamming until this question, which seems legit.
      1. AJ used and AZ used MLS as leverage (unless the gave him stupid money – Bradley money). I don’t was really going to come here unless they paid up.

      2. EPL is the highest paying league (even though all top 6 average above $1million/year in pay) and Sunderland offered the most in transfer fees (by far) – Lille was interested, Lazio as well, but they were thinking more like Eur 5million, but Sunderland offered Eur 10million. He went there.

      3. Finally, after Jozy’s abysmal 1.5yrs at Sunderland, Jozy didn’t have leverage. Sunderland wanted what Toronto had (straight swap Jozy for Defoe and some money). Lille came back, but only in a loan with an option to buy. Sunderland took the money and 18 goals a season (who still couldn’t score in their abysmal team). Jozy’s only leverage was not go to unless he got similar money which he got. Based on Jozy’s twitter postings (I follow him) and interviews, he wanted to stay in Europe (he didn’t like his time at Sunderland), but things aren’t often within our control.

  3. Remember Dempsey scored 17 goals/6 assists in 37 PL games in 2011-12 for Fulham. Had he been 24 instead of 29 he would have gotten big interest from CL clubs. You cant deny.

  4. Miss the days when we had more Yanks in europe.

    Dempsey at Fulham/Spurs.
    Bradley at BMG/Chievo/Roma.
    Jozy at AZ/Sunderland

It feels like we could have capitalized on the WC had we still had those 3 playing in Europe.

JOZY should have moved to Germany or Italy. Bradley could be playing in the CL had he stayed. I feel bad Dempsey did not get the move to Liverpool for he could have been playing with Gerrard and Suarez. Shame they turned him down.

    • I’m getting so tired of these posts. We all know where our players played previously, no need for the recap. Jozy should have done whatever Jozy wanted to do – it’s his life. I, for one, would much rather have him at Toronto than Sunderland. As for moving to Germany or Italy (???), there has to be interest not only from a team but from the player. It’s not like Munich or Milan were banging down his door. Had he made a transfer to Germany or Italy after the debacle at Sunderland, it would have been to another relegation fodder team. Just in a different language.

Liverpool did not turn Dempsey down. They made an offer to Fulham, but it was ridiculously low. Liverpool offered £3; Spurs offered twice that amount. Even Aston Villa offered £5, but Fenway wouldn’t pony up the money. And for what it’s worth, Spurs finished well ahead of Liverpool that season – why would Dempsey have been better off going to an inferior team?

      • yeah, if i could figure out the endgame, i’d just assume these comments are some kind of spam, since they all say the same inane things in the same structure with the same randoms all-caps. but there’s no hyperlinks, so i don’t see what they’re getting out of it.

      • It’s a mystery. Very similar to the tired “rank the top five strikers in the world” topic that was always coming up on these game day running commentaries.

      • Michael,

People in America tend to underrate just how unbelievably awesome Clint’s 2012 season was.

        But the Brits knew.

He came in fourth in the voting for that year’s Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award. The first three, in order, were RVP, Rooney, and Scholes.

The winner is selected by a vote amongst the members of the Football Writers’ Association a group of around 400 soccer journalists based in England.

What is interesting about this award is that the writers get just one vote for one player. No first second or third place votes compiled.

It’s only the best player that year period.

Which means there were at least a few of those guys who voted for Clint OVER RVP, Rooney and Scholes, pretty impressive company. I’ve always been very proud of Clint for that reason, among others..

Had he been 24 at the time I’m positive he would have gotten his CL move..
