DeAndre Yedlin, Aron Johannsson and Bobby Wood may have grabbed the majority of the headlines this week, but they were not the only ones to make an impact.
Like Johannsson and Wood, Rubio Rubin also found the back of the net during his club’s respective midweek match. Rubin scored his first goal in any competition this season and first for FC Utrecht since March when he tallied a late insurance goal in a 2-0 KNVB Cup victory over third-tier side ONS Sneek. The 19-year-old forward started the match, and scored in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time.
Rubin’s former U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team teammate Emerson Hyndman also ended a drought of his own. Hyndman played in his first competitive match at the club level since December by coming off the bench and contributing an eight-minute shift in Fulham’s 1-0 loss to Stoke City in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday. Fellow American Tim Ream started and went the distance in the game for the Cottagers.
Of course, the biggest spotlights were on Yedlin, Johannsson and Wood. Yedlin delivered an assist and held up particularly well in his Sunderland debut, a 4-1 defeat to Manchester City in the Capital One Cup. Meanwhile, Johannsson and Wood each got on the scoresheet for their teams.
