Tim Howard may not have had a chance to try and help the U.S. Men’s National Team top Brazil this past week, but he did help Everton overcome a powerhouse in the Premiership.
Howard returned to Everton after his first international call-up in more than a year, and reprised his starting role in the Toffees’ goal against Chelsea on Saturday. Howard made just one save in the match at Goodison Park, but it was enough to help Everton defeat the reigning champions, 3-1. The victory helped move Howard and the Toffees into sixth place in the league table, one point less than fifth-placed Crystal Palace and three shy of current runner-up Leicester City.
While Howard was helping keeping balls out of his goal, two Americans found the back of the net in the 2. Bundesliga. Andrew Wooten and Bobby Wood each scored for their respective clubs, with Wooten converting a penalty kick in a 1-1 draw with VfL Bochum on Friday and Wood tallying on an impressive solo effort in a 3-0 win against Karlsruhe. Wooten now has six goals on the year, which is tied for the league-high, while Wood has two.
Another note-worthy performance came in Scotland. Gedion Zelalem once again got the nod for Rangers, and helped the second-division club remain perfect with a 3-0 triumph over Livingston on Saturday. Zelalem turned in a 74-minute shift on the right side of a three-man midfield, as Rangers improved to 6-0 on the season.

What do you think of these performances? Impressed with Howard and Everton’s performances vs. Chelsea? Think Wood and Wooten will go on a tear in the coming weeks for their respective clubs?

So Klinsmann wants his players playing at the highest level (a statement he uses constantly to bask MLS), but is in love with players who play in the 2nd bundesliga (which I don’t think anyone can argue is as good as MLS witha straight face).
one can easily make the argument the 2.Bundesliga is no lower a level than MLS. in fact, it was only a few SBI Shows ago that Ives, himself, said any MLS fan saying MLS is 100% better than the 2.Bundesliga is simply dismissing the quality of 2.Bundesliga.
that said, i hope for the day that 1. the USMNT doesn’t have any 2nd division players and 2. MLS is a higher level, without any doubt, than all but the top 5-7 leagues. until then…
Hopefully Klinsmann scouting ability goes deeper then just rating players by what league they are.
I would really doubt it.
I think Hydman has to be pretty frustrated right now, not even making the bench but was not sold…
Ream unbeaten with Fulham thus far…
Seeing how O’Hara passes the ball from Fulham’s midfield, I can see why Hyndman doesn’t get a look.
Ingolstadt looking good early in the Bundesliga. It can only serve to improve Alfredo’s game.
That’s one heck of a goal by Bobby Wood!
Except it really showed poor soccer smarts. He had his striker partner streaking in for an easy breakaway and should have made the pass back towards mid field. Not denying it was great strength/speed to finish that off but good strikers play smart and make that easy pass.
@Mike S: After reading your comment, I re-watched the FC Union Berlin vs. Karlsruhe game highlights again. As soon as Bobby Wood stole the ball and started the breakaway on the left at mid field, two Karlsruhe players immediately closed down and converged on Wood. Fortunately, he’s already at full speed with heads down sprinting down the left flank. If he happened to look up and tried to slow down in order to pass inside, I bet Wood was gonna lose possession, and the fast break would have been stopped there.
It should be noted Yedlin did not feature for Sunderland as part of the loan agreement when playing against Tottenham.
