Manchester City made short work of Sunderland in Tuesday’s Capital One Cup clash, but DeAndre Yedlin can surely take a positive away from his Sunderland debut.

Yedlin provided an assist on Sunderland’s lone finish, but four goals within the first 36 minutes saw Man City stomp their Premier League rivals, finishing with a 4-1 victory Tuesday at the Stadium of Light.

Down 4-0 late, Yedlin played an inch-perfect cross onto the head of Ola Toivonen, who headed past Willie Caballero for Sunderland’s consolation goal. Overall, Yedlin proved dangerous out wide, as the U.S. Men’s National Team fullback bested Man City fullback Alexsandar Kolarov in the first half before seeing his well-hit cross headed straight at Caballero.

The visitors opened the scoring early, as Sergio Aguero buried a penalty kick in the ninth minute. Summer signing Kevin De Bruyne added a second in the 25th minute before a Vito Mannone own goal eight minutes later all but sealed the Man City win. Raheem Sterling added a fourth in the 36th, making Toivonen’s 83rd minute finish all but inconsequential.

Take a closer look at Yedlin’s assist and first-half chance below:

  1. I dont hate Yedlin, in fact the opposite, first game I saw him in person it was apparent he was special.

But assists when you are down 4 goals are worthless
and that is why I dont want him where he is.

Zero pressure other than trying get to a different team to play real soccer equalsa waste of time.

Are we to assume you mean that because Seattle is a contender there is more pressure there than at Sunderland?

Are you serious? If so your assumptions are flawed.

My assumption is that Yedlin wants to play because if he doesn’t his career prospects dimish the longer that goes.

At Seattle there is no such pressure on Yedlin. He would be as close to an automatic starter as it gets.

At Sunderland he will have to prove every practice that he deserves to play or they won’t play him. But I guess you don’t think that will make him a better player.

In the BPL they have this thing called relegation so even if they are not title contenders like the Sounders, Sunderland have to avoid relegation or they lose millions and staff and players get fired in bunches.

Meanwhile in MLS Maestroni gets rehired for leading his team to the bottom of the Western Conference

      Yeah, real pressure in MLS.

  2. So much hate. This is our boy! We should applaud him for being a bright spot in his first start in England. Gave the fans SOMETHING to go home with.

  3. Post-match Interview with Advocaat on SAFC.com.

Summary: he thought Yedlin did very well, but also thinks Billy Jones has been one of the better players this season and will be starting this weekend at RB.

The LF had an awful game, so I guess their might be possibilities there, or perhaps RM?

Yedlin was essentially the only high performing player in that 90 minutes that I could see. If he doesn’t get a start in the next game then the manager is a royal joke. If not at RB, then right wing for sure…his speed, and defense, and crosses were simply wonderful, contrasted with pretty much everyone else on the pitch for Sunderland.

It was a Capital One Cup game.

This means Man City was not taking it very seriously as anything other than a chance to get some fringe players PT.

And it was over early, which means Man City took their foot off the gas even more so in the second half.

Had this been a BPL league game and if Man City had been really interested, it might have been 5 or 6 to nothing.

DeAndre did well and certainly did himself a lot of good in Advocaat’s eyes, but don’t make it more than it is.

  4. I thought Yedlin had a decent game. He wasn’t beaten individually for any of the goals (and two were clearly the fault of the Left Back), though only made one key defensive play. Offensively, though, he was a threat and made not one but three passes worthy of goals. I suspect he’ll start this weekend.

  5. IF Yedlin can continue to get significant minutes over the next couple of weeks for Sunderland than you have to consider him as a potential starter at RB for the match against Mexico considering Fabian has yet to return from injury.
Regardless of where he’s deployed I hope that this is the beginning of him getting consistent minutes….as we need him to gain experience so that he can realistically improve the USMNT.

  6. good stuff!

but can he defend? certainly see why most coaches think of him as a RW, no question in his abilities in the attacking right corner.

looking forward to seeing him develop over there.

  7. Funny the diffrent perspectives. I watched with a die hard Sunderand fan who didn’t give a damn about Yedlin’s cross near the end of the lopsided loss and was more interested in throwing the whole team, Yedin included, under the bus for their dismal 1st half performance.

    • Both parts were well done. The cross was to the right spot, pulling the keeper well off his line and placing the ball away from any other defender. Even if the striker had missed, it was still on goal.

    • Yedlin’s job is to get it into a spot where the keeper can’t get it, the defender can’t get it, and Toivonen can. Both of those crosses were about as good as you can get for a guy that is running full speed. Very nice to see Yedlin showing well!!

    • We agree- definitely a great run/finish….. suppose we don’t- that was most definitely a great cross. Threat of speed backed off the defender/gave him space. Cross was weighted right, put right where it needed to be-near post far enough away from GK. No hype- credit where credit is do. The other highlight was even more impressive. Slick first touch/move by defender, good strength to keep him off- excellent cross. So, so hope to see him keep that up.

    • Well, on the one where they didn’t score, it was an inch perfect cross but Toivonen headed it straight at the goalie. So Yedlin did better on that than Toivonen did if you want to be picky.

    • Paul,

Well that is the dirty little secret about crosses isn’t it?

Like any pass, a good cross is only as effective as the two people involved, the crosser and the target of said cross.

You can whip in all the theoretically fantastic crosses you want but if there is no one at the other end to make good use of them it’s all a big waste.

In this case give credit to BOTH Yedlin AND Toinen

  8. I’m kinda reserving judgement but I really would rather use yedlin as an RB for the NT. especially if his stint at Sunderland goes well
