DeAndre Yedlin will be thrown right into the fire in his first action with new club Sunderland.
Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat told reporters Monday that he expects DeAndre Yedlin to make his debut with the club in Tuesday’s Capital One Cup clash with Manchester City at the Stadium of Light (2:45 p.m., beIN Sports USA).
Acquired on loan by the club on Sept. 1, Yedlin has yet to feature in two games for Sunderland, one of which was against his parent club, Tottenham. Most recently, Sunderland fell, 2-0, on the road to recently-promoted Bournemouth in a game that saw Yedlin included among the 18-man gameday roster.
“I was already expecting to let DeAndre play,” Advocaat said, according to the Sunderland Echo, “but I will certainly try some positions with different players.Maybe we have to start with totally different type of players because we’re playing in quite an attacking way.
“They need wins. The new players have to win a game, otherwise other people start moaning and I can understand that. On Saturday, they did not show me that they wanted to play. Not just the new ones, everyone.”
Advocaat went on to say that he hopes his team can find more cohesion going forward. As things stand, Sunderland sits dead last in the Premier League with two points through six games. In particular, defending has been the club’s concern, as the team has allowed a league-worst 13 goals.
“For our level, these are good players,” Advocaat added, “but the combination is still not there. I can’t make it clearer than that.
“How can I make it better? That’s a good question. I’m there to do that and we have to think about that with the staff. But it’s also the players, if they think they can go on this way, then we have no chance in this league.”
What do you expect from Yedlin’s debut? What would you like to see the U.S. Men’s National Team fullback improve upon during his time at Sunderland?

Yedlin needs to communicate well with other players. He needs to look up to see where the players are he can pass to. He needs to know he is a small fish in a big pond. I have seen him give up his defending role to move forward. But that made the defense vulnerable by leaving a gap that the opposition exploited. He needs to agree that he is relatively inexperienced, and there he has to show humility and then prove that he is worth every bit the confidence the team and the coach puts in him.
Birgit,
What makes you think he hasn’t tried to do all those things?

I don’t think he’s a good soccer player. But who cares what I think besides my mom
we all care
thats why were here
Thank you. Let’s make out
He isnt the greatest technical player but he is better than a lot of players in our system. Its not his fault that Jurgen wasted a year of development so his Germaniac Chandler could be coddled while failing miserably.
Wasted ? Elaborate, because my memory tells me the JK was one of the very few who thought Yedlin was world cup ready.. And so he brought him and he played more than Chandler, who didn’t see the field, and made an impact offensively and defensively in big games.
After that, Yedlin was basically waiting to start playing for his club, so, as is the norm in any national team, he didn’t get called up as much.
Troy,
If not for JK Yeldin would have spent the last year or so sitting.
He is not “good” in the definition of what a player in his position can do. And everyone talks about his world class speed, and since he isn’t slow, sure i’ll go along with him being a fast guy. but he doesn’t display much on the field in terms of vision, passing, dribbling, and defending.
He’s got youtube reels of him tracking back and tackling defenders, but that isn’t him taking a guy one on one. And when he’s attacking on the wing, he usually dribbles far out ahead of him just to cross it into the box without looking up to see if anyone’s even there; no placement at all just a prayer that someone will be there
I blame Jozy for Sunderland’s woes. /s
You’re THAT guy….
No that is Jozy
Jozy doesn’t get it. At Sunderland he was worthless partly because he was unwilling to put in mileage. And then he had this body language that showed that he thought the bad outcome was not his fault but everyone else’s..
You have to challenge yourself at the highest level … oops Sunderland right? forget that. News flash to the kid… If you can’t make the field with Sunderland then you’re wasting your time in the UK no matter how much you express yourself
Billy Jones, is that you? are you THAT worried about Yedlin taking your spot on the team that you have to come to a US blog to discourage Yedlin???!!!?!?!
lol
Wat are you on about. He joined the club exactly 13 days ago. Couldnt play in the first match and the coach didnt want to change a lineup that looked decent on the road at Bournemouth.
City’s second team is probably about the same level as Bournemouth so it will be more than a good enough first real experience.
In other news:
Miazga is developing as fast as Yedlin used to when he was here and playing. They better not be slowing his growth down, but I think we might already know the answer to that rhetorical question.
Quit Whining…
+1,000
It is in every player’s best interested to be playing regularly at the highest level he can play in a supportive/learning environment. The worst thing to do is not play. Yedlin was ready to go to a higher level where they play defense, but I was thinking more upper Championship (which I think is better than relegation bound in terms of defending and counter attacking).
Miazga is doing well. However, if he continues to improve, he has to move elsewhere where he’ll play and not sit (not EPL again NOT EPL). You always want to be playing.
Anthony,
Regular playing time is better than not playing but regular playing time in and of itself in MLS, assuming things stay as they are, is not good enough.
Not if you want to be a top flight soccer player.
You only have a certain window of time to reach your greatest potential. After that window passes you can still improve and develop but it won’t be the same.
The key is to move somewhere you will actually play. Spurs are a better team than Seattle but sitting on the bench or in the stands at Spurs is not as good for development as playing for Seattle. Spurs agree which is why they’ve sent guys like Yedlin, Oduwa and Ball to lower level teams.
Anthony,
Just to compare.
Man U’s Martial is 19
Stanford’s Morris is 20
Everton’s Stones is 21
Matt Miazga is 20
Martial will spend the next season playing in the EPL and the CL and learning from Depay, Rooney, Mata, etc. Chances are he will get to play in Euro 2017 with France.
Morris will be at Stanford and maybe get a few USMNT games in.
Stones will be in the EPL with Everton and maybe move to Chelsea next year. Chances are he will play in Euro 2017 with England.
Miazga will be with NYRB and maybe get the Olympics and the USMNT.
Given their ages who do you suppose will be readier for a 2018 WC call up should that happen?
What that says to me is Morris should stop wasting his time and become a pro if he’s serious about being a soccer player.
^ This (as long as he is monetarily compensated).
slowleftarm,
Martial and others already have a 2-4 year head start on him. Though you never know, Morris may just be that one exceptional player.
So he may as well enjoy his remaining time at Stanford
My comparison is meant to point out that, at the present rate, in general American kids are never going to catch up with European kids unless:
1. The developmental atmosphere for US kids improves dramatically
2. They move somewhere where the developmental atmosphere is better,
And in terms of the 2018 World Cup, the US player pool is not likely catch up in time. Miazga, the so called best prospect in a long line of best young American prospects at center back ( George John, Gabe Agbossamunde, anyone?) has a lot of catching up to do to a guy like Stones.
Miazga is trying to shut down guys like Wondo and Dwyer while Stones is trying to fend off guys like Aguero, Costa, Rooney and yes Martial.
Want to tell me who is more likely to develop faster and better?
Regardless of what Garber and Lalas, Twellman and all those other flunkies tell you, MLS is not going to reach the competitive level of the BPL, La Liga, or the Bundesliga in the next two years.
Even if it did MLS teams would not put Americans in the “skill” positions, like the #10 or the goal scoring striker. They don’t do that now.
They will just import another Giovinco, a Dos Santos or a Gerrard.
Right now the only American with similar stature in MLS is Deuce and maybe Jones if he is healthy. And y’all want to put both of them out to pasture as soon as possible.
That’s why JK scours the dual national lists so diligently. That’s why he is willing to walk that risky tightrope between winning for today and developing for the future.
Let Miazga do well this fall and during January and in his second season. The biggest part of Yedlin’s progression was in his second season where lots of players struggle against the adjustments made to counter their abilities. Im as bullish as anyone on Miazga but lets see him do it to begin next year as well. I hope he tears it up
@GaryPage – “play within himself” – Are you Dickie V in disguise?
this is Deandres chance to show he’s a PTPer Bay-bee!
This is his chance to impress. So, while he has to play within himself and not try to do too much and do something like get out of position, he has to give it his all. Maximum intensity and effort since Advocaat has implied that those characteristics have been lacking in the team.
He will get time by default and the fact that Advocaat wants fullbacks/wing backs like Yedlin. Honestly I could see him going to a wing back system at some point. Yedlin and Matthews could play that role and Van Aanholt is much like Yedlin.
Imagine Gooch will be in the 18 as well.
That alone would get my attention.
The quicker Sunderland secure their place in relegation, the more minutes he might get. Twellman’s observation that Sunderland will give him the minutes is as off the mark as his same comment when Green went to Hamburg on loan. Teams do strange things fighting relegation, and developing players on loan is not a priority. Tellman will probably be wrong once again, hope not. Then Yedlin must show he can helped them beat relegation at the earliestt opportunity.
Teams don’t care about the development of players they have in on loan but teams facing relegation do care about avoiding relegation so if Yedlin’s better than the guys they’ve got like Billy Jones, he’ll play. This is his chance to show that.
marco,
“developing players on loan is not a priority.”
Sunderland didn’t take Yedlin on loan to do Spurs a favor.
They took him most likely because they thought there was a good chance he might be close to being better than what they had on hand or could afford to buy during the transfer window.
If he’s good enough he’ll play because Sunderland need all the good players they can get.
Citing Green’s loan as some sort of template is a mistake since there were 4 managerial changes after he got their. That doesn’t happen a lot.
Plus Green isn’t any good.
Bayern seem to disagree with you, but you must know better.
Edmondo,
slowleftarm is the same guy who eviscerated NYRB for hiring cheap alternatives in Ali Curtis and Jesse Marsch.
Which tells you that his judgement on matters relating to soccer is not perfect.
Not true. I didn’t complain about Ali and Marsch because they’re cheap. I did complain RBNY ownership is cheap and I stand by that. The team is playing well not but could be better and deeper if they spent more. Seeing as the owner is worth $12 billion, I don’t think that’s unreasonable.
If BM thinks Green is so good why is he spending another season in the fourth division? He’s 20 now and should be playing at a higher level than that if he’s so great. I’m not saying he has to be in the Bayern first team but how about sending him out on loan to a 2.Bundesliga team? Probably no interest in him from those clubs.
Gianluca Gaudino and Sinan Kurt are with Bayern II and they are the same age. Listen, I agree that Green should be getting first team minutes Bundesliga.1 or .2 teams, but they are takinga lsightly different approach right now. Some of the shine wore off green, but he can get that back if he performs (and no…he should not have gone to the World Cup).
Gianluca Gaudino and Sinan Kurt are very highly thought of, but they are 1 year younger (no big deal).
“He’s 20 now and should be playing at a higher level than that if he’s so great. I’m not saying he has to be in the Bayern first team but how about sending him out on loan to a 2.Bundesliga team? Probably no interest in him from those clubs.”
Bayern Munich, like most German clubs, don’t keep you around if , as you say, he isn’t ” any good” .
Bayern have got plenty of other prospects that Green would be taking valuable development time away from if that were the case.
Dortmund dumped Boyd once they figured he wasn’t “any good” as far as they were concerned.
As far as NYRB goes:
“slowleftarm says:
December 22, 2014 at 9:22 AM
They are now supposedly doing the USL Pro team but otherwise I think Tom is right. Everything that’s been done over the last couple of years screams cheap and this move, hiring some unknown on a one year contract, is no different.
I don’t know which fans you’re talking about but I think that we need to develop young talent (American or otherwise) but also sign three DPs. And Henry/Cahill level DPs – not cheap out DPs. That’s what a serious team in a big market does. For example – LA Galaxy. You may also have noticed that they’ve won 3 of the last 4 MLS Cups. Often times, “old Euro players”, like Henry or Keane, are really good!”
Let’s be fair to the guy, teams pick up loan players sometimes to start but often to fill up the first team, unless you are the golden boys loaned from Chelsea or City, you are just another signee fighting for time against incumbents. Unless you are the Lukaku type of loanee, you don’t assume you’ll play, you earn it.
And a relegation battler is a decent percentage chance to toss a coach overboard as the season progresses, at which point he is no longer there with the coach who brought him.
Twellman wouldn’t know what it takes to break in because he spent his German career on a second team in the third division. His career really got rolling when he came to NE.
Sunderland are in the same division as Spurs.
They have no incentive to do them a favor by developng Yedlin.
At the very least they have to feel Yedlin either is better or has the potential into developing into something better ( and then maybe they can buy him) than what they have or can get in the short term.
If Yedlin doesn’t train well they won’t play him but to assume that he has less of a shot at playing time because he is a loanee is ridiculous.
In the EPL and particularly on Sunderland, no one, on loan or not, is safe.
All those guys from Advocaat on down are on notice.
They have Jones and Matthews for RB and Matthews was a comedy of errors against what some would presume to be inferior competition. I expect Yedlin to get 20 matches this year which isnt bad for a loanee on a team who just signed a guy outright that is the same age and from the UK
Just do your thing Yedlin. Fortunately he hasnt been playing yet so he wont be part of the group being tread on by Black Cats Supporters. Though I think SAFC supporters think too highly of themselves
most EPL fans think that way lol 🙂
DLOA, who should get fired first? Klinsmann or Sark? 😉
i just guffawed… wholeheartedly
btw….1954…… 6 decades….. over 2 generations………
Sark…..I remember when he was hitting on waitresses at Jimmy’s while at UW. Even heard some scandalous things that happened. Sark is a joke. Good O-Coordinator terrible head coach
This is an opportunity, nothing more. The coach said essentially he doesn’t like what he is seeing from the first team. Their record sucks. So he is getting the classic B teamer’s cup runout with the carrot of first team action dangled if he shows well. So, we’ll see how he does.
+1
Yeah, right… just put Yedlin out there and give the schmuck an opportunity with a little play time on the first team. NOT like that has ever happened to this guy: don’t think there is any question how this is going to end. 😉
Well saying he couldnt play against Spurs and then Advocaat didnt want to change the lineup that looked competent before the match at Bournemouth. So no way to really know now is there.
It’s going to be a tough year for Yedlin. I expect Sunderland to be relegated. I hope he remains in good spirits and focuses on personal improvement.
Survive the test. Minimize your errors. Win your 1v1s. Show the flash of attacking ability. Rinse. Repeat.
