Bobby Wood scores on impressive solo run as Union Berlin cruises to victory

Bobby Wood FC Union Berlin

That Bobby Wood got up and scored after losing his balance and falling in the penalty area was impressive. That he did so at the end of a lung-busting run that started before midfield was even more so.

FC Union Berlin cruised to a 3-0 road win over Karlsruhe on Saturday, and Wood got himself on the scoresheet with a highlight-reel play in the 49th minute. Wood collected a ball just before the midfield line by muscling off a shoulder barge from a Karlsruhe player, and proceeded to dart upfield. The 22-year-old forward then got by another defender before losing his footing, but still managed to get back up and calmly slot a ball into the back of the net before anyone could clear the ball.

Wood’s goal was FC Union Berlin’s first insurance goal in the match, and his second of the 2. Bundesliga season. The U.S. Men’s National Team forward was used as the club’s lone striker on Saturday, playing 72 minutes and receiving a yellow card before being substituted.

You can see the goal here at the 1:33 mark:

What do you think about Wood’s goal? How impressed were you by his dribbling run? Expecting this to be his breakout season in Germany?

  1. Funny as the commentator is describing the third goal–“‘Game Over’ fuer den KFC…” (obviously not meaning the fast-food chain, although I suppose now that I think about it, that could be taken as an additional point of humor that Karlsruher FC is thus abbreviated). I thought it amusing that ‘Game Over’ is now apparently yet another German neologism derived from us.

  2. For those of you who really like waking up early on Saturdays, I highly recommend 2 Bundesliga.
It’s a nuthouse. Tons of goals and crazy fans who know they have no shot at the Bundesliga. They just love fun fussball on a Saturday.

  3. Good effort, sure…the urge to get overexcited is because at least he scored, maybe he’s not another striker who flames out… in contrast, Union’s third goal was class.
Anyways, go Wood! I always root for Wood…

  4. Wow! What a goal!! What an individual effort to steal the ball, run at the several defenders with good control at full speed. Love to see that fight at the end to not just stay down and wave his arms for the penalty but to get up and slot it home. That’s the tenacity needed to be a goal scorer. Good stuff.

    • usually you and i agree, and here i do somewhat but i wasn’t THAT impressed by this goal, kinda clumsy on the fall, he was trying to lean into the defender and kinda just fell. sure credit for not staying down etc but i meeeeeannnn…. lol. plus, everyone stopped to see if the ref would do anything so it’s easier to beat a gk then. but over all good goal and good focus but i’ve DEF seen better imho 🙂

      • When’s the last time you saw any other potential starting USMNT forward score a goal like that? Good aggressive run and he didn’t give up on the play.
