Aron Johannsson’s acclimation to the Bundesliga continued with another goal on Tuesday.

Facing off with SV Darmstadt, Johannsson scored Werder Bremen’s opening goal in the 19th minute of the teams’ Bundesliga clash. The U.S. Men’s National Team forward’s finish is his second for Werder Bremen and comes in his fifth start for the club after joining this summer from the Eredivisie’s AZ Alkmaar.

Johannsson’s finish was of the headed variety and came following a series of scrappy play from his new teammates. Having received the ball from striker Anthony Ujah following a battle in the corner, fullback Theodor Gebre Selassie bulldozed his way into the box before firing a cross to the back post. Waiting on the far side was Johannsson, who leapt towards the ball and unleashed a diving header, giving his side the 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.

Bremen went on to relinquish the lead 12 minutes later, as SV Darmstadt’s Sandro Wagner converted a penalty kick to level the scoreline at one apiece. Bremen would go on to lose the game, 2-1, on an 84th minute winner from Wagner.

  1. I remember Wondo had some Dutch interest after 2011 or 2012. Cant recall.

But good point youth does seem to matter. Though McBride made a 1m5million dollar move to Fulham at age 31

    • Age definitely matters. Clubs will pay more for youth and potential than they will for a player who is 29-30-31 as they are unlikely to recoup their investment if the contract is a few years in length as they won’t be able to sell them.

This the example the poster above is apt comparing BWP to Cyle Larin…

    • oralph,

1.5 million dollars is practically throw away money in the BPL.

      For comparison’s sake

Aguero is listed at 60 million euros.
Yedlin is listed at 1.5 million euros
Wondo is listed at 1.2 million euros
Will Bruin is listed at 800 thousand euros

  2. Iceman had decent scoring stats for AZ and got a move to a midtable German team at best while Jozy had similar stats for AZ and got a move to a relegation fodder PL team. Its just interesting what can get you moves to a big club or not.

Like does a 20-25 goal a season striker in MLS get a move to a big club in Europe? Or is MLS scoring looked down on? What do you think

    • I believe Sunderland paid a lot more for Jozy. It’s really just not as simple as number of goals in this league gets a move to up to this level. Alot of it just comes down to business.

All depends on who is scoring them. Cyle Larin is going to have a lot more interest abroad then lets say BWP. Sure BWP is better but Larin is cheaper and has more potential. Making a move much more likely.

      • oh see what I can do,

In general, a big club will look at two things:

        1. Will that player’s scoring touch translate to their club?

        2. What will that player’s resale value be?

When Dempsey had that great 2012 for Fulham his biggest problem was his age.

The CL clubs he wanted to join probably would have been willing to overlook that he came from a smaller club or that he had no “natural” position if he had been 22-23 instead of 27-28.

They said Martial was obscenely overpriced when Man U. bought him.
But now, if keeps playing like he has been lately, he will more than pay for himself in a few years and by then he can be resold for profit if things stay the way they are now.

Do you know any 19 year old MLS strikers, American or otherwise, who is as good as the 19 year old Martial is right now?

    • How about a starting NAT forward that has trouble scoring in MLS unless its a PK. How does that look?

It will be interesting to see what JK does if Aron keeps scoring at a higher level. How will he rationalize not starting Aron?. Lets see if he keeps it up or not
