Wednesday’s clash couldn’t have started much worse for Manchester United, but the end result was the one desired for the Red Devils.
After conceding a fourth minute opener to Daniel Caligiuri, Man United came back to score a victory over Wolfsburg via a 2-1 result at Old Trafford.
The comeback began with a 34th minute Juan Mata penalty kick finish, and the Spaniard continued his influence throughout the contest. Mata then turned provider on the winner, finding Chris Smalling on a 53rd minute corner kick for the game-winning goal.
Man United and Man City’s victories leave English clubs on just nine points through eight total games played following Tuesday’s slip-ups from Arsenal and Chelsea.
Here’s a closer look at the rest of Wednesday’s Champions League action:
MANCHESTER CITY COMES BACK AGAINST BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH
Manchester City looked destined for yet another Champions League disappointment, but then Sergio Aguero struck.
The Argentinian striker scored an 89th minute winner for the Premier League leaders, leading Man City to a 2-1 victory over Germany’s Borussia Monchengladbach in Wednesday’s clash at Borussia Park.
Wednesday’s clash started poorly for Man City, who were bailed out by a penalty kick save from Joe Hart in the first half. After seeing the German club open the scoring in the 54th minute via Lars Stindl, City got their reply just 11 minutes later on a goal from summer signing Nicholas Otamendi. The Argentinian defender’s tally paved the way for his countryman to net the winner, as Aguero converted his own penalty kick after being fouled in the box.
As a result, Man City moves to second in Group D on three points, level with Sevilla but ahead on goal differential.
JUVENTUS PUSH PAST SEVILLA INTO TOP OF GROUP B
Juventus’ domestic woes have certainly not carried over into European competition.
The reigning Champions League Runners-up are currently languishing in 15th in Serie A, but it mattered little in Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat of Sevilla at Juventus Stadium.
Propelled by a finish from Alvaro Morata in the 41st minute, Juventus appeared to be in for a nervy ending as the clock ticked down. Simone Zaza left no doubt, though, as the forward, who replaced Morata in the 80th minute, sealed the deal with an 87th minute clincher.
With the win, Juventus remains atop Group B after defeating Manchester City last time out.
ATLETICO MADRID UPSET BY BENFICA
In Wednesday’s major surprise, Portugal’s Benfica escaped from Madrid with all three points.
Goals from Nicholas Gaitan and Goncalo Cuedes led the way as Benfica erased a 1-0 deficit to top Atletico Madrid, 2-1, Wednesday at the Estadio Vicente Calderon.
Atleti emerged on the front foot Wednesday, as Angel Correa’s 23rd minute opener appeared to set the tone for the hosts. That tone was quickly washed away, as Gaitan’s 36th minute leveler snagged the momentum before Guedes provided what would be the game-winner six minutes into the second half.
With the loss, Atleti remains on three points, while Benfica jumps to the top of Group C following consecutive victories.

The announcer for the Man City, Borussia Munchengladbach game indicated that it was F Johnson who committed the foul in the box that led to the winning PK. Ouch. Well, Klinsmann wants his players in the CL and, theoretically, you learn more from your mistakes..
Gary Page,
So you’re blaming JK for BMG’s loss. Typical.
Come on GW, he said nothing of the kind, although there is some typical commentary going on here to be sure
If you are going to play in the CL eventually you are going to make a mistake.
If you want to avoid making a mistake then don’t play.
Gary Page’s commentary reminds me of the second by second dissection of Jozy;s tenure at Sunderland where his every movement was dissected ad nauseum.
