The Maryland Terrapins may have a young squad in 2015, but one of those freshman came up big Friday night.
Freshman striker Sebastian Elney gave the SBI No. 6 Maryland Terrapins a huge win against the No. 1 UCLA Bruins in College Park.
The Terrapins controlled the match from the beginning, and senior midfielder Mael Corboz was the first to score after a Chris Odoi-Atsem shot struck the arm of a Bruin. Corboz finished from the penalty spot, but UCLA forward Abu Danladi would tie things up in front of 8,449 at Ludwig Field.
However, Maryland’s record crowd would not leave disappointed, as Elney rose high in the 96th minute to give his side the 2-1 win with a golden goal.
“When you have two teams of this caliber go back and forth and compete at the highest level this early in the year, that’s an incredible soccer game,” Terrapins head coach Sasho Cirovski said following the match. “This was a magnificent atmosphere and it will certainly go down as one of the magical moments in Maryland Soccer history.”
The preseason No. 1 and current No. 8 Georgetown Hoyas continue to have a rough start to the opening season. Akron took down the Hoyas, 1-0, with junior Adam Najem scoring the lone goal for the Zips.
No. 9 Clemson coolly defeated rival South Carolina in front of 7,868 fans Friday, as sophomore midfielder Oliver Shannon scored a brace while senior TJ Casner added one as well.
Meanwhile, in a battle of Top 25 teams from North Carolina, No. 13 Coastal Carolina calmly handled No. 20 Charlotte, 2-0. Sophomore forward Arnar Geirsson and junior defender Miguel Gutierrez tallied for the Chanticleers, who have yet to concede a goal this season.
