Sunderland boss Advocaat gives Yedlin’s debut performance positive review

Despite his club’s result, DeAndre Yedlin put forth a performance against Manchester City that caught the eyes of many, including his manager.

Following Sunderland’s 4-1 loss to Man City in Tuesday’s Capital One Cup clash, the U.S. Men’s National Team fullback was one of few players that earned some praise from Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat. Yedlin was solid in defense going up against a tough opponent in Raheem Sterling, and on the other end was among Sunderland’s more dangerous players, especially with his ability to cross the ball.

“Yedlin did really well for his first game,” said Advocaat. “He needs to get to know the players better but I was pleased with the space he found himself in and his work rate.

“I’m not sure how he’ll figure on Saturday as Billy Jones has been one of our best players.”

After nearly creating a goal in the first half, Yedlin delivered an assist on Sunderland’s lone tally, finding the head of Ola Toivonen for a late consolation.

Tuesday’s appearance was Yedlin’s first for the Black Cats since joining the club on loan from Tottenham. Yedlin and Sunderland return to action on Saturday with a trip to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United.

  1. Yedlin has some slight culpability in the 3rd goal, but none in any of the others. Van Aanhalt on the other hand was partially, if not directly, responsible for all four goals. (1 – fouled for pen, 2 – lost DB on run, 3 – beat by man in opening of sequence, 4 – kept Sterling onside).

  2. I was at the game and was very impressed with Yedlin’s overall performance. He was a joy to watch when getting forward. Yes, his defending did let him down at times, but you have to bear in mind the sheer quality of the opposition. Manchester City are one of the best sides in the world, with many of their players costing more than the entire Sunderland team!
    P.S…Billy Jones isn’t that good.

  3. Billy Jones may have the starting position locked, but Yedlin’s performance will make Advocaat consider him as a sub when the team is chasing the game and needs a more dangerous option. Luckily, Sunderland will be chasing the game frequently. He’ll get his chance.

  4. FWIW Yedlin is actually the second American signed at SAFC, they also have the less noticed Lynden Gooch. I have no idea. But there are 2.

      • So you are basing your assessment on the play-by-play that you followed? Really, it’s probably best not to comment on a game that you didn’t watch.

      • they tend to tell you who was at fault for goals, in the vicinity of the play, etc so yeah, i relied on my play by play for my analysis. You must be new to this site since i don’t see you comment very often thus trying to diminish my perspective, although not from watching the game in real time, is pretty silly.

    • This is one of my concerns about this generation of American backs, many are not athletes (particularly centrally), and when they are, they are often these naïve runners who seem to lack either a defensive cruncher’s knack or a sense of positioning. There aren’t many (any?) Popes or Bocas who can run and pass and think and defend.

I think some of this reflects the transition from youth club/Bradenton development, where the youth NTs needed to groom their own backs and could devote time and a residency to doing so (and the players grow up used to playing with each other), to pro club development, where pro clubs sign people early, they don’t play as much, and they are picked as much for body type and future potential as for present competence. It’s a mature soccer country’s problem but one we are beginning to struggle with.

    • Agreed. His defensive positioning was really poor. He looked lost most of the time–never sure if he was supposed to pinch in or stay wide. He gave Sterling far too much space and paid the price repeatedly. Even on his goal line clearance, it was his own misstep (toward the wing where there was no danger) that opened the space for the attacking run in the first place.

Yedlin looked terrific going forward, but he played his part in giving up 4 goals in 40 minutes, so there is obviously work to be done on that end.

  5. Billy Jones has turned up well for them, but mainly this was just a good way of saying Yedlin isn’t going to see a lot of play time, but he’s enjoying how many new American supporters his team now has.

    • Haha did you even watch the game? He was one of their best players, easily. Put in a great cross on a platter for Ola after skinning Kolarov, and then served up another great cross for their only goal. Yedlin should see more playing time, but I think the manager wants to see if Billy Jones is the better option when they need to bunker down defensively, which is pretty much every game.

      • he also defended well, apparently he cleared a ball of the goaline and kept up with runners in his area. Only bad moment i remember reading was that he misplaced a pass that was intercepted but he tracked back to defend the turnover.

      • Defensively Yedlin’s game was a nightmare. All but the penalty goal came from his side of the field, Sterling and De Bruyne abused him all day, he had problems tracking runners and got caught out of position on several occasions (see highlights), he shanked an uncontested clearance that luckily rolled harmlessly to his keeper, he almost gave up an second penalty kick with a missed tackle in the box and had several bad giveaways that either killed attacks or led to Man C counters, and, his goal line clearance prevented him scoring an own goal. That said, he wasn’t the worse performer of the day. The defense as a whole was atrocious. All was not bad however, he did have a few good defensive moments, his two completed crosses were all pro, and he had a couple of dangerous penetrating runs – albeit late in the game and well after City had packed it in. Considering his skill level, experience and the fact that it was his maiden voyage, I give Yedlin’s performance a resounding C+.

      • @utopic, Which part of the world did you come from? The way you described you were watching a totally different game from all of us? Have you been drinking heavily? I know Yedlin is still learning his defensive positioning and game awareness, but you made it so horrific and totally lost credibility right there!

      • Defended really well. Their goalie was an absolute train-wreck and let in 2. The 3rd? he was left in no man’s land bc the CB’s were so far out of position it wasn’t funny. The 4th goal the Midfielder was supposed to track back and instead just watched as they left Yedlin high and dry.

      • If the coach has him ticketed as a wingback, and the wingback playing his position is deemed “best player on the team” right now, it doesn’t matter short term how he did in a cup runout, he’s second best and Jones will be out there for league games. He was politely saying he still thinks Jones is better, softening the blow somewhat by saying he’s their perceived best player.

What he might do is remind the coach where he often plays for the USA. That would end run the Jones issue. The coach might then find another “best player on the team” there as well.

His other chance is long term maybe the guy gets card trouble or hurt and needs to play. But this situation is classic young player on loan.
