MLS’ final match day is approximately one month away, but the race for the Supporters’ Shield is still wide open.
The Vancouver Whitecaps suffered a disappointing defeat to contenders Seattle Sounders and, to make matters worse, their local rivals won the coveted Cascadia Cup in the 3-0 win. However, the Canadian club still remains in first place on the Supporters’ Shield table.
The New York Red bulls are closing in on that position fast, though, as the East Coast team traveled across the country and found a important 2-0 win against the Portland Timbers Sunday. The Red Bulls have the same amount of points, 48, as the Whitecaps, but they have a vital game in hand.
Meanwhile, the LA Galaxy are on a downward spiral, having lost two and tied once in their last three MLS games. With CONCACAF Champions League also on the schedule, the reigning MLS Cup winners have to figure things out quickly if they want to claim the regular season title.
Sporting KC could make the biggest jump up the table in Week 30, as Peter Vermes’ men play twice, a road meeting with the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday and an intriguing contest with the Sounders on Sunday.
Here are the current MLS Supporters’ Shield standings, and the upcoming matches that will have the biggest impact on that race:

Who do you see winning the Supporters’ Shield? What match are you most looking forward to this week?
Share your thoughts below.
Gotta watch PPG and strength of conference over everything else
That puts RBNY in the driver’s seat for the shield.
They’re gonna have a tough time in the playoff against Western teams who can play through their gegenpressing
It NJ’s to lose, look at that remaining schedule! And I think they will take it, Marsh has really impressed this year.
Looks like RBNY fans have to root for boy city this week? Not going to be easy.
With Miazga and Ouimette gone for Olympic qualifying for much of October, RBNY’s chances may depend in great part on — gulp — Ronald Zubar, who has played so little and so infrequently that he may not yet know Damien Perinelle’s name. Luis Robles is going to have a busy month.
They’ll probably miss two games. At least they’re both at home but hopefully Zubar can step up. Though with this guy’s injury record this year who knows if he can even play two games in four days? He has to be better than Roy Miller at CB though. Wow was that experiment a disaster!
Probably three games — October 3, 7, and 14 — because the qualifiers go from October 1 through October 13. Maybe if they win the all-important semi-final on October 10, could Miazga get released back to RBNY early?
Perinelle and Zubar are both French, are roommates, and spend time together off the field.
Perinelle ran to Zubar after his goal against Portland.
They’ll be fine until Perinelle gets another 7 yellow cards and Zubar tears both ACLs.
Well there’s a good-news/bad-news post!
