With UEFA Champions League play just around the corner, Arsenal received some bad news Tuesday.

Arsenal will meet Dinamo Zagreb Wednesday, but Jack Wilshere will not be a part of that game or many to come, as he will miss approximately three months to recover from surgery he is expected to have on his left fibula.

“Due to a slow healing response from a fracture suffered in August, the club can confirm that Jack Wilshere is to undergo an operation to his left fibula,” a statement Arsenal from said. “The decision to intervene has been taken quickly after regular reviews by specialists, who feel that Jack’s scans show that the healing process is not progressing as well as expected.”

An injury during training in early August has kept the English national team midfielder from contributing thus far for Arsenal in its 2015-16 English Premier League season.

The 23-year-old has suffered 21 injuries in the previous six seasons.

Here are some more news and notes:

CHEPO DE LA TORRE OUT AS HEAD COACH OF CHIVAS GUADALAJARA

After five losses in eight matches during the Apertura 2015, Jose Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre is out as head coach of Chivas Guadalajara.

The former Mexican national team coach helped Chivas reach the semifinals of the Clausura 2015, but with Chivas under threat of relegation after a string of losses, the two-time Chivas head coach is no more.

“Jose Manuel de la Torre was named manager of the first team in October of 2014,” a release from Chivas said. “However, from that date he hasn’t achieved the results the team requires, which forces it to take this difficult decision and look for another way to achieve the goals the team requires and to reach and fulfill the fans’ expectations.”

After each Clausura tournament, teams with the worst winning percentage from the previous six tournaments are relegated to Ascenso MX. Chivas currently has the second worst winning percentage, sitting only above Sinaloa but still in the relegation zone.

Former River Plate coach Almeyda arrived in Guadalajara on Sunday and is likely to replace Chepo.

“I met with the president, I had a meeting an hour ago and it was about football,” Almeyda told reporters Sunday. “We exchanged footballing ideas and now there is one meeting left and we’ll see how it goes.”

Chepo’s brother, Nestor de la Torre, will also step down as Chivas sporting director.

CANADA, GHANA TO MEET IN WASHINGTON D.C. FOR OCTOBER FRIENDLY

One of Africa’s best national teams is heading to the nation’s capital in October, but it will not be meeting the U.S.

Canada and Ghana will reportedly play a friendly on Oct. 13, and the venue is likely to be RFK Stadium, although no stadium has been named so far.

The Ghanaian national team has important Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifying games ahead. Meanwhile, Canada and head coach Benito Floro will be busy with the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament.

The two sides have only met once before, with the Canucks walking away the victors in a 2-1 win in 1985.

WEST HAM DOWNS NEWCASTLE DESPITE DELAY PROTEST

Newcastle continued its poor start to the English Premier League season, as West Ham United took it to the Toon Army early, but a late arrival may have helped the Hammers to victory.

Thanks to a brace from Dimitri Payet, West Ham had no problem taking down Newcastle, 2-0, Monday evening. The Hammers now sit in fifth on the EPL table.

After the game, though, Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren told reporters that the league denied the team’s request to delay the kickoff by 15 minutes due to heavy traffic that prevented players and staff from reaching Upton Park in a timely manner to prepare for Monday’s game.

The traffic apparently forced Newcastle players to walk the final mile to the stadium in order to arrive before the start, but they only had approximately 25 minutes until kickoff.

“We felt that the preparation wasn’t long enough and we asked the referee (to delay the start of the game),” McClaren said. “From my experience in football it is usually permitted but it wasn’t, and we had to deal with that. It was the Premier League’s call.”

  1. I fear that Jack Wilshire’s career will come to and end too soon, like that of Stuart Holden. Wishing him a full recovery, but the odds may be against him.
