Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

Timmy Chandler Eintracht Frankfurt 61

Jurgen Klinsmann might be taking a closer look at fullbacks these days, and two European-based ones could really help their causes with some strong performances this weekend.

Timmy Chandler made his way back from injury as a substitute in Eintracht Frankfurt’s 5-1 loss to Borussia Moenchengladbach last Saturday, and is now hoping to break back into his side’s lineup. Frankfurt faces Hannover on the road on Saturday, and Chandler could be reintroduced as a starter given that the Eagles have not won in five consecutive Bundesliga games. Chandler has not gotten the nod since suffering a knee injury on Aug. 29, but will be keen on putting an end to that streak while trying to get into a rhythm for the remainder of the campaign.

Eric Lichaj has already found his stride, and is aiming to build on his goal-scoring performance from Tuesday. Lichaj netted his first goal for Nottingham Forest in a 1-1 draw with Burnley, and his focus has shifted towards trying to edge Ipswich Town on Saturday. Lichaj and the rest of the Reds are in sore need of a win, too, as they have not won any of their last five games.

There will be an intriguing showdown of U.S. Men’s National Team players elsewhere in England on Saturday. Tim Ream and Danny Williams will square off when Fulham welcomes Reading to to Craven Cottage in one of the Championship’s earlier games during this round of action. Ream and Fulham might be the hosts, but still have a tough task given that they face an in-form Reading side that is in third place and on a five-match unbeaten run.

Which of these matches are you most looking forward to? Think Chandler will start for Eintracht Frankfurt? How do you see Lichaj doing? Should Klinsmann call both up to the U.S. Men’s National Team for next month’s initial World Cup qualifiers?

  1. Agree w/ Nate…….I used the comment count to check for hot topics. Granted this site is pretty predictable – JK/USNT stories will have tons of comments, women’s soccer or college will have none

  2. Agreed on the above comment – would be great to be able to see the number of comments on each article on the main page. Far more inclined to click on a story if it looks like there is a good debate going on.

    • agreed; the comments are at least half the reason i visit the site. i don’t want to have to actually open each post to see if there are comments.

      • Wow, you all are lazy! This is not Burger Kung where you can have it your way. It’s click bait, use common sense on what topics people will be commenting about the most. Those will be the ones with the most comments. Duh.

      • “Wow, you all are lazy!”

no arguments there. and if ives is convinced that we lazy people make up a critical mass of his audience, he can make the change. not sure why you’re up in arms about it.

  3. The upgrade is whatevs, but what was nice about the old site was that I could see the number of comments on an article before clicking, and since I’m mostly here to read commenters, that made my life easier.

Also, this post has a time date of half an hour ago, yet there are comments on here from yesterday. How does that work? I see no update notices in the article.

    • Just click in the article, and look at the top after the article to see how many comments there are. Anything with Klinnsman, or Men’s national teams will be getting 60+ comments.

    • The Fuerher doesn’t know how to identify talent! Always picking Germans instead of Americans. How else can you explain Julian Green getting called up instead of Landon Donovan? His line-ups are always terrible! FIRE KLINSMANN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Wow, fourth division hat trick – I’m so impressed. It’s not that he can’t make Bayern’s first team – he couldn’t make Hamburg’s either and no one in the 1. or 2. Bundesliga apparently wanted his services this year. Face it – everyone thought bringing in passport Americans as ringers would be a great idea but it’s been a bust.

      • mike,

i seriously hope you meant to write “johnson”, not “johansson”. i mean, it’s laughable either way, but that would make it at least a little more reasonable.

      • @Nate Dollars I meant both of them. JOHANSSON is tearing it up in the Bundesliga before he got hurt, and Fabian is a great player too. I am not saying they would be starters, but they would make the first team. They are on par or better with a inform green who has made Bayerns first team before. Nice try trying to male me look like a idiot, you failed.

      • Auto correct. They are on par with a in form Green. Nice try, trying to make me look like an idiot you failed.

      • mike,

as i’m sure you realize, julian green only made the first team because he was already on the books with bayern’s academy. unless you think that any player who’s as good as julian green is also good enough for bayern’s first team.

and sure, johannsson is just “tearing it up”, with his 2 goals.

  4. not trying to waste any more words on lichaj, but a pet peeve of mine is when defenders only seem to get praise/attention for scoring (like when articles list a defender’s stats as “2 goals in 42 games”).

yes, it’s great that he got a goal, but he’s been solid for quite a while now. his primary job is to defend; any goals he gets are just bonuses.
