Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Fabian Johnson Borussia Moenchengladbach 72

Jurgen Klinsmann looked and sounded confident on Tuesday when he hinted that Fabian Johnson would play for Borussia Moenchengladbach this weekend.

On Saturday, Johnson did just that.

At the center of a controversial exit from the U.S. Men’s National Team this past week because of a reported injury, Johnson added further fuel to the fire by getting the nod and going the distance in Moenchengladbach’s 5-1 rout of Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday. Johnson started on the left side of the midfield for his club, and helped it pick up a win that moved Moenchengladbach to 10th place in the Bundesliga. The performance, however, only raised further questions as to what really happened during last weekend’s CONCACAF Cup clash with Mexico.

While the league loss was certainly one to forget for all of Eintracht Frankfurt, the match marked the return of Timmy Chandler. Playing in his first game since Aug. 29 because of a knee injury, Chandler came off the bench and contributed 31 minutes for his side. The appearance was the veteran fullback’s third of the campaign, and will help him as he aims to get back to full fitness.

Like Chandler, the U.S.’s top two goalkeepers also suffered defeats against talented opposition. Tim Howard and Everton dropped a 3-0 result to Manchester United on Saturday while Brad Guzan and Aston Villa fell, 2-0, to Chelsea. Howard made three saves as Everton saw a five-game unbeaten run come to an end, and Guzan came up with two stops in the Villans’ fifth straight defeat and eighth game without a victory.

Another notable performance came via DeAndre Yedlin, who played from whistle to whistle in Sunderland’s 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday. Yedlin was deployed at right back in the match, but could not help prevent the Black Cats from suffering their fourth loss in their last five games. The start was Yedlin’s second straight for last-placed Sunderland.

  1. Time to add Eugene Starikov at Choronomorets in Ukraine to this weekly update. He scored a goal this weekend. Ukraine is clearly a better league than Norway and he did attend Camp Cupcake that one time so he should be on here.

    • I’m a firm believer in FJ at LM as well. I’m not digging up the stats at the moment so I could be wrong of course, but I recall when Jozy last went on a streak of goals at some point last year, pretty sure Fabian was at LM for the majority of those games, providing the service and creativity all the jozy fluffers (myself included) clamored for during his time at Sunderland.

That all said, not really sure it’s really news that he played a great game at LM, he definitely tends to play pretty friggin well no matter where is on the pitch.

      • Malkin, when Fabian Johnson has provided service to altidore, which lead to goals, Johnson was doing it the majority of the time from one of two wingback spots.

      • Paul, you go do a little fact checking, then get back to me. I’ve already done the fact checking, so I know the answer. Don’t cry though when you find out how wrong you are.

  2. FJ looked good in that game too. hit the post with a great run and shot. had the secondary assist on one of the goals. nicely flicked the ball over his defender (Chandler), which started the breakaway. as of now, my November XI:

    ———–Dempsey————–Zardes————–
    —————————Lee—————————–
    FJ———————————————–Bedoya
    —————————-MB—————————-
    Chandler———JAB———Cam———–Yedlin
    ————————–Howard————————-

for me, i’m playing FJ at left mid where he has looked great for his club. we need that creativity in midfield. with Chandler back, and if Yedlin can keep starting at RB, then there is no need to play FJ in the back anymore. i will note that Ream has shown well enough and could easily start over Chandler at LB.

Bedoya is there because the guy brings it. but he needs to get back onto the field or his spot will be taken. in central mid, i think against St. Vincent there is no reason to not use Lee and Bradley together. i have it listed as a 4-4-2 with a #6 and #10, but honestly i don’t care too much about how it actually plays out. just want to see them together.

central defense is straight forward. unless JAB re-injures himself or doesn’t get playing time, i want to see him and Cameron getting reps from here on out. Alvarado is still not playing at his club, no reason to play him on the US at the moment.

Morales and Williams will be worth keeping an eye on too. hope to see Finlay and Nagbe involved in the camp as well.

    • Brooks hasn’t been playing much for club

Nagbe, Lleget and Finlay all could be useful call ups. Actual wingers….not guys jammed there out of position.

      • yes, i mentioned that. he was out due to injury. but he is back and barring a setback, i’d expect him to slide right back into his starting position.

      • to be fair, Finlay is the only pure winger. Nagbe and Lleget were CMs moved out a bit wider. Nagbe still plays in the middle more than wide. and just because you are playing RM or LM does not mean you are playing as a winger.

JK is notorious for playing a narrow(ish) midfield with the fullbacks providing the width. in any event, i like all three guys and want to see them integrated with the team.

  3. Time to move on past Howard and Guzan. They are both junk. Howard will not get any better as an old man in 2 years. And Guzan is what he is: a relegation goalkeeper in an average league. Its Bill Hamid time. He is the best goalkeeper in America. Time to get him the international experience he needs to be ready for World Cup.

    • If the MNT is supposedly as good as people think it is, this wouldn’t be a big loss. Like Vela wasn’t a big loss for Mexico.

  4. Well, according to this article Aston Villa lost twice on the same day, once to Chelsea and once to Stoke. That makes for a tough weekend. I watched much of the Ingolstadt v. Stuttgart game and I don’t remember Morales’ name being called. It seems like the one US player who did well this weekend was F Johnson. A bit or irony I think.

    • The same reason mix over feilhaber, or like when he was picking his A team for the gold cup squad, Alvarado and brooks over besler and gonzo,

    • This has been beat to death. He has had both in camp. He brought Lichaj in multiple times. I watched him play when he was with Aston Villa and watch him occasionally when I watch the Championship on Bein Sports.

Lichaj does not impress me. If Lichaj did get called in, he would be 4th in the depth chart: Fabian Johnson – Yedlin – Chandler – Evans (over Lichaj). Chandler is a enigma. I have seen him play MUCH better in the bundesliga than with the USMNT. I have no qualms bringing in him, if you want to again as well. However, I doubt he would overtake FJ or Yedlin. However, I think 4th choice should be grooming for the future. Keep in mind that Lichaj is older than Yedlin and Chandler.

Guess what, there aren’t many Professional US players younger than Yedlin. At the moment I can only think of a couple (Payne & Moore come to mind), but they aren’t seeing playing time for their clubs. Until one of the U-20 guys actually starts seeing minutes or until Chandler is back to playing 90s than I have no issue with the possibility of brining in Lichaj.
