U.S. Men’s National Team striker Aron Johannsson is set for some time on the sidelines after undergoing surgery.

Werder Bremen announced Wednesday that Johannsson underwent successful hip surgery in Berlin on Wednesday. Johannsson will now remain in Berlin before beginning a rehab stint with Bremen, while the club expects to be without the forward for “the coming weeks.”

The injury will likely keep Johannsson out of World Cup qualifying, which is set to begin for the USMNT on Nov. 13.

“We have exhausted all non-surgical treatment options,” said Werder team physician Dr. Philip HeitmannĀ and, unfortunately, could notĀ sustain freedom from pain.”

The 24-year-old striker joined the German club from Holland’s AZ Alkmaar this summer and has scored twice in six appearances. However, Johannsson has been sidelined since late September due to the nerve irritation in his right hip.

What do you think of the Johannsson news? Any concerns going forward?

  1. As much as he has been injured the past year to year and a half, I worry that he is injury prone. Both Spain and Germany have done well without playing an out and out striker. After Dempsey retires and if Jozy is injured, the US might have to go that route unless Zardes and Wood or Morris or someone steps up. Agudelo had a wonder goal yesterday, but he seems to go for fairly long stretches without scoring. Not looking good for the near future.

  2. Half of being a professional athlete is talent … the other half is the ability to stay healthy. Hope this is just an odd, one-off thing that he quickly comes back from. If so, I don’t see any reason he won’t become a highly sought-after F.

  3. Does the USMNT have the worst luck with injuries to key players or do I just see it that way because it’s my team and I follow them more than others? Geez.

      • There have been significant injury issues within the USMNT for the better part of a decade. Be it Tab, Armis, O’Brian, Cladio, Davies, Gooch, Jones, Jozy, Fabian, etc…
It seems to hit us hardest due to the limited depth of the US Player Pool. We have so few players of high quality that when one is sidelined due to injury it has a greater impact. We are slowly building enough depth and quality that hopefully it will not be as devastating as it once was.

  4. It’s really a shame that he’s been consistently injured. Hopefully this surgery does the trick, but if the recovery time table is a few weeks, we will likely be without him during our November World Cup Qualifiers.
