With Saturday’s result, FC Dallas inched even closer to a potential Supporters’ Shield while locking up the top spot in the Western Conference.
Led by a second half finish from David Texeira, FC Dallas slipped past Real Salt Lake, 1-0, Saturday night at the Rio Tinto Stadium.
With the victory, FC Dallas now sits on 57 points with just one game remaining in the regular season. Joining FCD in the Supporters’ Shield race are the New York Red Bulls, who sit three points behind ahead of Sunday’s clash with the Philadelphia Union.
As a result of the loss, RSL are eliminated from postseason play.Texeira’s decisive finish came in the 57th minute on a defense-splitting pass from Mauro Diaz. Receiving the ball at the top of the box, Texeira was played in all alone by Diaz’s pass, and the FC Dallas forward made no mistake in slamming a shot past Nick Rimando for the game’s lone goal.
The clash proved to be a scrappy one, with the two teams combining to register seven bookings, five of which were earned by RSL players.
In addition to providing more cards, RSL also proved to be the more creative, registering 19 shots to FC Dallas’ 9. In particular, Kyle Beckerman proved one of the more threatening RSL players of the opening half, forcing a save out of Jesse Gonzalez before smashing an open header off the bar in the 31st minute.
RSL’s best look came four minutes later through Juan Manuel Martinez, whose wide-open shot from the penalty spot was pushed away by Gonzalez.
Following the win, FC Dallas returns to action October 25 against the San Jose Earthquakes, while RSL returns midweek against Municipal in CONCACAF Champions League play before closing out the season against the Seattle Sounders.
Holy Soccer Site. An article about FCD on SBI
One of the best teams in the league. No one cares cause… FCD lives in the shadow of the Cowboys and oddly… the Rangers.(I honestly don’t understand where all these baseball “fans” were hiding from like 1995-2009. Never mind its a terrible sport who can sit in the Texas sun for 6 hours without heatstroke.)
Also, I’m pretty sure Beckerman didn’t hit the bar on that header in the 31st… it was close, though.
Jeff Atinella, not Nick Rimando
