Last Friday’s attacks in Paris sent shockwaves throughout the world, and now, U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder Alejandro Bedoya is hoping he and his teammates can be part of a healing process for a country that is very much in need.

Ligue 1 play is set to resume this weekend, as Bedoya and FC Nantes visit Monaco on Saturday in the first round of matches since last weekend’s terrorist attacks in Paris. As an American that has experienced similar tragedy after living through the Sept. 11 attacks, Bedoya understands the importance of showing a message of solidarity as the country continues to heal.

“We think of all the victims and families affected,” Bedoya told French outlet 20 Minutes. “As an American, it reminds me of the 2001 attack. Everybody knows the Bataclan in Paris. Music is part of French culture, as are drinks with friends in a bar.

“It’s amazing that in 2015, when you go out with your family, you know that anything can happen. But, as the president of Holland said, life goes on. Sport continues, and we continue to try and have the best possible time.”

Bedoya, who was not a part of the most recent USMNT squad for World Cup qualifying, was expecting to go to Paris before news broke of the attacks. Citing the displays before France’s recent friendly with England, Bedoya now knows the time has come to make a statement, not just for France, but for the rest of the world.

“It sends a message to everyone,” Bedoya said of this weekend’s games. “Sport, football, it’s freedom. By playing, we show that we do not fear. When a tragedy happens, it is important that everyone stays together. The most important thing are the images of solidarity and unity.”

With all the roster news, I overlooked that he wasn’t called up for the last round. Was there a reason given?

      • Answer given in the last part of the original article. His coach didn’t want him to go, and Bedoya didn’t either. He hadn’t even trained in three weeks, sick with a flu then another virus.
