Bobby Wood scores one, assists on another in six-goal draw

Bobby Wood FC Union Berlin 19

FC Union Berlin may have settled for a disappointing draw at home on Saturday, but Bobby Wood did his part to try and earn the club all three points.

Wood scored his fifth goal of the 2. Bundesliga season and delivered an assist in an exciting 3-3 draw vs. FC Nurnberg. The 22-year-old forward pulled his side level at 1-1 in the 21st minute before hitting the pass that set up the spectacular go-ahead goal from Steven Skrzybski nine minutes into the second half.

A day after being named to the U.S. Men’s National Team’s roster for its first two 2018 World Cup qualifiers, Wood netted his first club goal since Sept. 26 by alertly pouncing on a rebound and slotting it home. He then helped Union Berlin take a 2-1 lead shortly after halftime, making a diagonal dribbling that allowed him to find Skrzybski for a long-range blast that perfectly found the top corner.

Unfortunately for Wood and Union Berlin, those plays were not enough to secure a victory. While the club went on to take a 3-1 lead, Union Berlin conceded twice in a span of nine minutes to settle for a tie that left it in the bottom half of the league standings.

Wood, who is nonetheless sure to have gained confidence from his performance, will have to move on quickly. He is set to join the U.S. this week ahead of Friday’s initial World Cup qualifier at home vs. St Vincent & the Grenadines.

What do you think of Wood’s performance? How much will this boost his confidence heading into the USMNT’s upcoming camp? Should he start in at least one of the World Cup qualifiers because of that?
