Monday Kickoff: Neymar joins Messi, Ronaldo as Ballon d’Or finalists

The three finalists for the FIFA Ballon d’Or were announced on Monday, and there were no real surprise inclusions.

FIFA revealed that Real Madrid star and reigning Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo will have to defend his award against two Barcelona teammates. Argentine playmaker Lionel Messi and Brazilian winger Neymar round out this year’s finalists for the annual award.

Ronaldo has claimed the previous two awards, but Messi is the heavy favorite to win it this time around, as he helped Barcelona win the treble last season. Neymar, meanwhile, scored 22 goals during the previous La Liga season, but that number pales in comparison to Messi’s 43 goals scored and Ronaldo’s 48.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique Martínez and Jorge Sampaoli are the final three coaches up for nomination for this year’s FIFA World Coach of the Year for Men’s Football award.

The award ceremony will take place in Zurich on Jan. 11, 2016.

PUMAS, AMERICA AMONG LIGA MX TEAMS TO REACH SEMIFINALS

Based on seeding, there were only two surprises in the Liga MX quarterfinals, but all four teams to reach the semis are arguably the league’s best.

After forcing a 1-1 tie on aggregate, the round’s No. 1 seed Pumas UNAM advanced to the semis due to its better finish on the league table during the regular season campaign.

Pumas will play No. 6 Club America, which topped No. 3 Leon, 5-3, on aggregate. America claimed the CONCACAF Champions League title earlier this year.

In the league’s second semifinals pairing, No. 2 Toluca progressed and will play No. 5 Tigres UANL.

The semifinals first legs will be played on Thursday, while the second legs will take place on Sunday.

ALEXIS SANCHEZ INJURED IN ARSENAL TIE WITH NORWICH CITY

Arsenal did not have the best of Sundays.

The Gunners went on the road to Carrow Road on Sunday and conceded, in head coach Arsene Wenger’s words, a “soft goal” en route to a 1-1 tie with Norwich City. Mesuit Ozil scored for Arsenal in the 30th minute, but Lewis Grabban scored the equalizer just before halftime.

The main talking point following the game, though, was the injury of Arsenal’s star Alexis Sanchez. Sanchez limped off of the field, clutching his left hamstring in the 59th minute. He was subsequently substituted off.

“The players are there to play football and not to be rested when the press decides they need to be rested,” Wenger said after the game.

“He says it is a kick on his hamstring,” he added. “I fear the reality is worse than that.”

Santi Cazorla also left Sunday’s contest due to injury, suffering a knock to his knee.

Arsenal was unable to move up the EPL table with the tie, so it still remains in fourth, only two points behind leader Manchester City.
