Steven Gerrard is reportedly heading back to Liverpool this offseason. In what capacity remains to be seen.

Gerrard is expected to rejoin his former club Liverpool at some point this winter after having multiple conversations with new manager Jurgen Klopp, English outlet the Independent reported late on Tuesday. The 35-year-old midfielder is currently expected to only train with the Reds until he’s due back in the United States for the start of the LA Galaxy’s preseason on Jan. 15, but there is supposedly the chance that he returns to Liverpool for good.

Such a move would probably require a transfer fee, as the Galaxy are reportedly not interested in loaning out Gerrard back to the Premiership side. Gerrard has one more year on his contract with the Galaxy, which he joined this past summer on a Designated Player deal.

The veteran Englishman and defending-champion Galaxy endured a disappointing end to their first season together. They lost last week to the Seattle Sounders in the first round of the MLS Playoffs, falling, 3-2, at CenturyLink Field.

Gerrard finished his first MLS campaign to mixed reviews. He started each of the 13 regular-season games he appeared in and scored two goals while assisting on three others, but only of those five tallies that he was involved in came after Aug. 24.

What do you think of Gerrard reportedly heading back to Liverpool? Should the Galaxy explore selling him so as to free up a DP spot for the 2016 season? See him returning to the MLS club next year and having a huge season?

  1. I’m sure there’s a sucker team in England that will pay MLS for him. Sunderland anyone? They could become the team for washed up English stars who washed out in MLS. What about Bournemouth? Put Gerard on your team’s jersey has to be worth a few mill to any team in Engerland.

  2. lame, no need to loan an old player. Either buy him back permanently or let him take an off-season.

I don’t see Ibra, Ronaldo and Yaya Toure spending their summers in the states playing with MLS teams.. because it’s a bad idea to skip offseason and preseason (even if ours is longer than most)

Now if Liverpool want to bring Jamieson, Zardes or any other of the promising MLS sub-25 players on loan we will talk..

  3. Gerrard will stick to his commitment and LA didn’t see the best of him, he’ll want to make up for that.
I think LA expected too much, they expected him to be the stand out best player on the team – expect 3rd best and appreciate the shirt sales and everyone will be happy

  4. Pretty sure that this is a bunch of speculation by SBI, he’s heading to Liverpool to train just like Beckham trained with Arsenal. Plus there is no way Lievrpool would re-sign him, everyone in England knows his legs are gone. I do think his performances were terrible for the Galaxy, if I was Chris Klein and I could get out of his contract, rather than roll the dice on him next year I would for sure.

  5. In his interview with the Independent to me he came off as a whiner. Of course one of his complaints was he didn’t get to spend as much time in his bellaire home as he would like. Of course spending the winter in liverpool as opposed to LA makes a lot of sense. I hear Liverpool is just the pick of the litter when it comes to climate from December through march.

      • Makes sense to me. At Liverpool he has nothing to prove; he’s already a legend. He’d likely be expected to have an elder statesman role, helping out as needed but not necessarily carrying the team. At LA he’s expected to immediately lead the team to championships. That’s probably unreasonable considering he’s spent his whole career at one place. To expect him to change everything about his life as he’s leaving his prime and continue to lead and be dominant, even at the lower level in MLS, is probably not realistic (I know, hindsight and all).

      • Absolutely

LA wanted to win the league. They did the year before. You are probably not old enough to remember Liverpool doing that.

Liverpool aren’t really trying to. Sold their top striker instead.

      • Absolutely

LA is expecting to win the league. They did last year for instance, something that probably hasn’t happened for Liverpool in your lifetime.

They aren’t really trying. Sold their best striker instead.

Perfect fit. They can bring back their hero. Really doesn’t matter if they do or not for results. AND LA needs to get rid of him to win

      • Do you really think I wasn’t born in 1990? Also, Liverpool fans certainly believe they can win the league, and why not? They were a Stevie G slip from doing so just 18 months ago. Plus, they’ve won the UCL fairly recently. It’s absolutely absurd to say there is more pressure on a LA Galaxy player than a Liverpool player. Believe me, I wish we could say that. But soccer is not at that point in this country yet.

  6. If they could unload him and get a guy who can actually play that would be great but why would Liverpool want him? He is not even close to BPL quality at this point unless we are talking eating contests.

    • Well, I happened to see a Liverpool game this last May and Gerrard was the best player for Liverpool in the game. He was certainly of EPL quality 6 months ago. After Gerrard was with the Galaxy for a couple of weeks Bruce Arena was quoted as saying that he thought he had “hit a home run” in signing Gerrard.

      • He doesn’t look like he has the legs anymore, mostly because of age and maybe in part because maintaining peak fitness to play in a retirement league in his view wasn’t worth the effort.

Of course Bruce is going to say it was a great signing. What do you expect him to say? ‘Well, now that he is here its obvious this guy is old as dirt and wont offer much positive outside of dead ball deliveries’.

I just feel like for the younger talent that can now be available to MLS the money is better spent elsewhere. Leave guys like Lamplard and Slippy G in Europe.

      • Looks like we found out how much of a homerun was actually hit.

LA should only let him go if Liverpool offers to buyout his contract on top of a transfer fee.

      • What game was that? I am a Liverpool fan, and can’t recall a game in his last 2 seasons where he would be considered the best player.

  7. This guy does not have the legs….or the desire….for MLS. Close this chapter so as not to further embarrass yourself Stevie.

  8. To me he seems like a guy who really would do better in his second season, now that he’s go the lay of the land. Sort of like Tim Cahill settled in.
