Approximately one week after German police raided the country’s football federation (DFB), an important decision was made.

DFB is currently under investigation after a report in October claimed the 2006 World Cup was bribed to take place in Germany. While the DFB president claimed he did nothing wrong, Wolfgang Niersbach stepped down from his position as president — a post he has held since 2012.

“I have realized myself that that the time has come to take political responsibility for the events around the 2006 World Cup … (although) I can say that I worked there absolutely cleanly and conscientiously,” Niersbach told reporters.

Frankfurt prosecutors recently opened an investigation of tax evasion against Niersbach and two other federation officials. The payment currently in question is a $7.22 million (€6.7 million) transaction made to FIFA from the federation.

With ‘El Clasico’ right around the corner, all eyes are on Lionel Messi, and one Barcelona official thinks he is on track to return for the pivotal game.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu says Messi is currently on track to recover from a knee injury he suffered against Las Palmas on Sept. 26.

“The recovery of Leo Messi is within the timeframe we set ourselves, but we do not intend to force anything,” he told Spanish outlet AS. “I hope he can play. If he can, great, but if not, we have a lot of talent to beat them.

Barcelona is scheduled to face Real Madrid on Nov. 21 at the Bernabeu. Messi has scored six times in 10 appearances during this campaign. In spite of missing many games for his club, Barcelona has won seven out of its nine contests since the Argentine star was sidelined.

REAL SOCIEDAD SACKS MOYES

David Moyes is on the hunt for another job after being sacked by Real Sociedad late Monday.

The Spanish club released a statement saying that Moyes’ contract had been terminated, and assistant coach Billy McKinlay would also be departing the club.

Eusebio Sacristan will replace the Scottish manager, who was also relieved of his duties at Manchester United in April 2014.

Real Sociedad is currently 16th on the Liga BBVA table with nine points through 11 games played.
