UCL Rewind: Bayern stomps Arsenal; Chelsea moves into second with win; and more

bayern-arsenal

If Arsenal was looking to replicate its performance from the last time it took on Bayern Munich, it failed miserably at doing so.

Unlike the last time they played, Arsenal had little success in containing Bayern Munich’s high-powered attack in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League clash and was thrashed, 5-1, by Bayern at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night. The loss leaves Arsenal on just three points through four games and the English club is all but certain to suffer a group-stage elimination.

It took just 10 minutes for Robert Lewandowski to open up the scoring, while Thomas Muller and David Alaba provided additional finishes to close out the first half at 3-0. The second stanza proved little better for the Gunners, who saw goals scored by Muller and Arjen Robben. A goal from Olivier Giroud served as little consolation, while a Mesut Ozil finish was disallowed for a handball.

With the victory, Bayern sits on nine points, level with Olympiakos for the top spot in Group F.

Here’s a closer look at the rest of Wednesday’s Champions League action:

CHELSEA MOVES INTO SECOND IN GROUP G WITH DEFEAT OF DYNAMO KIEV

While the pressure is far from gone, Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea recovered at least a bit of goodwill with a victory on Wednesday.

A finish from Willian paired with an Aleksandar Dragovic own goal led the way, as Chelsea captured a 2-1 victory over Dynamo Kiev at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea got started through Dragovic’s self-inflicted tally in the 34th minute. The Dynamo Kiev defender responded with an equalizer in the 77th, but Willian’s 83rd-minute strike proved to be enough to secure all three points.

Chelsea moves up to second place in Group G with the win, three points behind group leaders Porto.

ROMA, LEVERKUSEN PLAY ANOTHER THRILLER

Roma and Bayer Leverkusen played arguably the game of the competition the last time they met, as the two teams battled back and forth in a 4-4 draw.

Wednesday’s encounter proved a worthy successor.

Leverkusen battled back from a 2-0 deficit, but a late Miralem Pjanic penalty kick earned Roma a 3-2 victory in Group E action. Roma now sits in seconds place with five points, half that of leaders Barcelona, while Leverkusen stays on four points.

The Italian club quickly established a 2-0 lead via strikes from Mohamed Salah and Edin Dzeko in the second and 29th minutes, respectively. Leverkusen battled back on finishes from Admir Mehmedi and Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez within the first six minutes of the second half, but the German club was doomed when Pjanic stepped up to the spot in the 80th minute following a Omer Toprak foul that yielded a red card.

Here’s a closer look at the rest of the day’s results:

Barcelona 3 – 0 Bate

Gent 1 – 0 Valencia

Zenit 2 – 0 Lyon

FC Porto 3 – 1 Maccabi Tel Aviv

Olympiakos 2 – 1 Dynamo Zagreb

Comments

  1. Somebody should pull Chicharito aside and explain to him that “the most overrated player ever” shouldn’t be scoring so many goals.
