English sides struggled again, while Europe’s elite took care of business in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League action.
Manchester United could only manage a scoreless draw at home against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday evening in the UCL, meaning Group B is still wide open. Earlier in the day, Wolfsburg eliminated CSKA Moscow with a 2-0 win courtesy of an own goal and an Andre Schurrle strike in Group B action. The draw at Old Trafford means that any combination of Wolfsburg, Man United, and PSV could make it through to the Round of 16.
In Group A, Real Madrid took an early lead but almost suffered a late comeback against Shakhtar Donetsk. The Spanish side won 4-3, though, off the back of a Cristiano Ronaldo brace and pair of assists for Gareth Bale and Luka Modric. Elsewhere in Group A, Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored on his return to his first ever professional club, as Paris Saint-Germain marched to a 5-0 away win over Swedish side Malmo. An Angel Di Maria brace and a goal apiece from Adrien Rabiot and Lucas Moura finished out that result.
Atletico Madrid moved to first place in Group C with a 2-0 home win over Galatasary, with Antoine Griezmann scoring both the goals. Earlier in the day, FC Astana managed a 2-2 draw at home against Benfica. Now, Madrid and Benfica are guaranteed spots in the knockout rounds.
Juventus completed the double over Manchester City in Group D, beating the English side 1-0 in Turin from a Mario Mandzukic strike. In the other Group D match, Fabian Johnson and Borussia Monchengladbach put on a show, beating Sevilla 4-2 in Germany.
