Who should the USMNT call up for November qualifiers?

USMNT lineup vs. Mexico CONCACAF Cup 29

Most of the focus in the American soccer world right now is on the MLS Playoffs, but Jurgen Klinsmann surely has some of his attention elsewhere.

That’s because the U.S. Men’s National Team’s first two World Cup qualifiers are around the corner, and Klinsmann needs to figure out what kind of roster he wants to take into those important matches.

The U.S. will officially begin its walk down the road to Russia 2018 later this month with a Nov. 13 home game vs. St. Vincent & the Grenadines and a visit to Trinidad & Tobago four days later. The Americans might be seen as the favorites in each of those encounters, but the U.S. head coach has the challenge of assembling a roster that can perform better than the veteran-laden squad that fell to Mexico in the CONCACAF Cup  in October.

Klinsmann has talked about potentially replacing some of the older and more reliable players on his team with younger prospects who need minutes in order to prepare for what’s ahead, but radical changes seem unlikely given that this is the start of qualifying. Still, Klinsmann could begin to weed out some of his elder statesmen in this upcoming camp and replace them with players who are familiar with the national team setup but haven’t received many minutes.

Klinsmann also needs to figure out what to do with the versatile Fabian Johnson, who he sent home in October to “rethink his approach” to the U.S. cause.

Who will be called up for these initial World Cup qualifiers? Here is the roster we could see when Klinsmann unveils his selections on Nov. 8:

Goalkeepers (3): Brad Guzan, Tim Howard, Bill Hamid

Defenders (7): Matt Besler, John Brooks, Geoff Cameron, Timmy Chandler, Michael Orozco, Tim Ream, Brek Shea

Midfielders (8): Michael Bradley, Mix Diskerud, Jermaine Jones, Alfredo Morales, Lee Nguyen, Danny Williams, DeAndre Yedlin, Gyasi Zardes

Forwards (5): Juan Agudelo, Jozy Altidore, Clint Dempsey, Bobby Wood, Andrew Wooten

Some thoughts:

Several veteran regulars are sure miss the cut here, including Chris Wondolowski, Kyle Beckerman, Nick Rimando, and DaMarcus Beasley. They would be replaced by the likes of Andrew Wooten, Lee Nguyen, Bill Hamid, and Brek Shea, as Klinsmann goes out with the old and in with the new.

Fabian Johnson, while still in his prime, also could be left off given how fresh the wound still is over his perceived lack of dedication. Johnson is playing regularly for UEFA Champions League participant Borussia Moenchengladbach right now, but it might take more than a month for things to blow over between he and Klinsmann.

One of the names that might catch most people’s attention here is Juan Agudelo. Klinsmann appears likely to start counting on some younger attacking blood, and Agudelo provides just that and an exciting skillset that could add a dimension to the Americans’ attack off the bench.

At goalkeeper, Klinsmann has already stated that it is “likely” that both Tim Howard and Brad Guzan rotate starts in the upcoming games. The in-form Hamid would come in after them as the No. 3, replacing Rimando and earning a just reward for his continued outstanding showings in goal for D.C. United.

Some may be surprised not to see Ventura Alvarado or Alejandro Bedoya on here, but neither of them have played much in recent weeks. In fact, Alvarado has not seen any time for Club America since mid-September while Bedoya has not seen the field since missing out on the CONCACAF Cup because of an illness.

Klinsmann will also be counting on several key veterans to help out during this potential transition phase, including Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey, Jermaine Jones, and Jozy Altidore.

What do you think of this projected USMNT roster? Like it? Who would you like to see included/omitted? Should Klinsmann bring in even more youth?

  1. I’m thinking:

    GK Dempsey
    RB Beckerman
    CB Julian Green
    CB unknown German American
    LB D Regis
    DM Altidore
AM Rimando (in case we go to pks)
    RM Bradley
LM David Regis will play both LB and LM
    FW J Jones
    FW David Wagner

  2. With the injuries, illnesses and all the guys who aren’t playing or already on vacation, this is the perfect time to buck the trend and actually call in a few new faces outside of January camp. Klinsmann needs to win these games, so I don’t think he’ll go too far off the reservation, but I think he’d do well to include Finlay, Nagbe and Hedges this time around. And we can always hope for Benny, but that ship has likely sailed, despite the fact he’s on the short list for MLS MVP.

    FW: Dempsey, Jozy, Wood, Zardes
MF: Bradley, Williams, FJ, Jones, Nguyen, Nagbe, Finlay, Morales
DEF: Cameron, Besler, Ream, Yedlin, Hedges*, Evans (if healthy), Chandler, Orozco
    GK: Howard, Guzan, Hamid

    * With Alvarado and Brooks not getting time, and Cameron just coming back from injury, I think this opens the door for Hedges. Guy is playing at a Best XI level (late foul this past weekend aside) and at 25, he’s got the right blend of youth and experience to make an immediate impact should we need him.

    Line-ups:
    St. V &G…..
    ———– Dempsey ———-
    FJ ——- Nguyen ——- Finlay
    —— Bradley — Wiliams ——
    Ream – Besler – Cameron – Yedlin
    ————— Howard —————

    T&T….
    ————- Dempsey ————–
    FJ ——– Bradley ——– Zardes
    ——- Williams — Jones ———
    Ream – Besler – Cameron – Yedlin
    ————— Howard —————-

  3. Biggest weakness is a right winger(gyua when healthy), a true left back so FJ can play in midfield and a solid dcm. If midfield could hold a lil possession than the defense wouldn’t be that bad. Need to play a 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1 basically same thing.

    Benny Feilhaber : Pure skill
Charlie Davis : Is always at the right place right time .
Alejandro Bedoya: consistent player in natural position
Jordan Morris : bring this young man on team up top with
Juan Agudelo: let these boys loose
Omar Gonzalez : come on really ? No questions

    Darlington Nagbe

    Rubio Rubin

    Cameron Carter-Vickers

Paul Arriola – this boy can flat out play and determined , this boy along with Benny Feilhaber together with Jordan Morris and Agudelo up top along with Michael Bradley and Alejandro Bedoya

Now these guys will have fun

  5. GK- Howard, Guzan, Hamid
DF- Yedlin, Lichaj, Bornstein, Ream, Cameron, Besler, Evans
MF- Bradley, Trapp, McCarty, Johnson, Lletget, Finlay, Zardes, Nagbe, Feilhaber
    FW- Wood, Wooten, Morris

Yedlin must play in his natural position of RB, as should Johnson in LW. Enough of this experimenting absurdity. Unlike Shea and Chandler, Lichaj and Bornstein have played consistently and well enough to merit a shot at the fullback positions. Bornstein is 30, but his services will be needed to fill a desperately empty LB spot, while we hope a new LB is discovered in the meantime. Evans is useful as a reliable RB but also is playing CB for Seattle. Solid guy. Ream must be given a chance at CB. He plays there at Fulham, and I bet he’d be a bit better than Besler. McCarty is 28, prime age, and is playing very well at DM, I’d choose him over Kitchen who lacks finesse. Trapp of course is our future in DM, but to have him competing with Dax is best. Morales and Williams have not proven themselves capable in the DM role, this is the time to look for change. Needing an overhaul in the wingers and CAM position, Johnson and Lletget are the best for LW, Finlay deserves a spot next to Zardes, who plays better as RW than LW, while Nagbe and Feilhaber are must-haves for the No.10 role, with Lee Nguyen lurking in the depths to snatch a spot if either don’t do well. For strikers, Altidore must be left in Toronto for the time being, he’s quite poor. Give spots to the energetic and in-form men, and Wood, Morris, and Wooten each have a promising future in their careers, unlike Jozy. In the future, Johannsson should be called up assuming he regains fitness and form after his hip injury.

  6. What does ethan finlay and darlington nag be have to do to earn a call up, it’s so frustrating to see some of the US’ best talent left out just to force players Klinsmann likes into a formation that doesn’t work

  7. Considering how much of a MUST.WIN. this match is in terms of job sercurity, i think we don’t see a lot of experimentation. That’s a shame, because if there were ever a match to do it with, it’s this first one.

I also find it funny no one is really beating over a drum over how JJ should not be called due to his treatment of the ref at the end of the playoff game against DC, especially considering what a stink folks made over Dempsey tearing up the refbook in the US Cup a few months… at least that instance didn’t feature straight up shoving of the ref…

    Reply
    • Nobody who didn’t already dislike Dempsey was saying that he should be suspended from the National Team. Jones and Dempsey both were wrong, everyone acknowledges that, but Dempsey just tore a notebook, and Jones just tried to turn the ref to look at him. It’s not like they took a cheap shot on a player with his back turned or anything.

      Reply
    • Also, I don’t this match has anything to do with job security. He can lose or tie this and win the next two and be fine. JK stands as HC until he qualifies and plays in the next WC, or he doesn’t qual and then get’s fired.

  8. Don’t forgot, some of these guys may still be playing in the MLS when the international break arrives. Dempsey and Evans in Seattle, Dax and Sasha in NY, Nagbe in Portland, Kitchen and Hamid in DC, Trapp in Columbus. All these teams are still alive now, and any one of them could still be alive and waiting to play in the MLS Cup conference finals when the international break arrives. You really think Seattle would release Dempsey to go play in Trinidad a week before the Western Conference Final?

    Reply
    • They don’t really have a choice on international fixture dates. They can ask for consideration, but they can’t prohibit the call up. That’s why MLS put the break in the playoff schedule during that week.

  9. If your looking for a surprise, Julian Green. He has 6 goals for Bayern II, yes its 4th division, but its better competition than Stanford is playing and they train much more per week than NCAA allows.

  10. I think Franco is pretty close on his roster, remember these guys will only have a day or two of training before a meaningful game against St.V.&G and then with travel only a couple more days before T&T. I don’t see a big turnover in the roster for these two and I don’t think you’ll see too many first time call ups like Finlay or Lletget until after the January camp. Sorry that’s probably the way its going to be.

  11. Guzan should be left behind. He’s an indecisive keeper at best and is often standing confused after each goal at Villa. Then he blames the defense. I’d prefer Hamid, Howard, and Remand.

  12. A bunch of veterans way past their primes, some of whom will be played out of position just to get them on the field.

A couple of youngsters who have shown promise but who have not proven that they are ready for international play.

    Another new CB combination.

    Jozy Altidore.

  13. According to Player statistics (Whoscored.com) most of those players selected at not playing at there best (hence our current fall from grace). We need different players to get different results:

Defenders : Matt Besler (7.32), Brek Shea (6.68)

Midfielders (8): Michael Bradley (7.17), Mix Diskerud (6.89), Jermaine Jones (6.90), Lee Nguyen (6.99), Gyasi Zardes (6.84)

Forwards (5): Juan Agudelo (6.70), Jozy Altidore(6.80), Clint Dempsey (7.51),

5 of those players are under a 7 as far as player rating. According to the stats the team camp should involve the following MLS players (with 7+ rating)

    Defenders: Gonzalez (7.70), Miazga (7.50), Ellis (7.35), Rogers (7.26)

    Midfielders: Feilhaber (7.40), Klesjan (7.37), McCarthy (7.26), Nagbe (7.21)

    Forwards: Amarikwa (7.23), Wondolowski (7.13)

    • Interesting. I would definitely be okay with Sasha, Dax and Nagbe over Mix, Jones and Lee for this callup. In addition to your stats we should not be looking at too many players who seasons ended already. Either in Europe, Mexico or still in the playoffs should be preferred.

Jurgen would love working with Amarikwa, and with that name why not capt’n, but we already have a better version of him in Bobby Wood. Jan camp maybe

  14. I want to see a 4-3-3.

    In the back: Johnson-Besler?-Cam-Yedlin.

In midfield: Benny or Lee attacking, Nagbe at the 8, and Trapp at the 6.

    at forward: Zardes-Demps-Agudelo.

I’d like to see Morris see some time up top. Benny for Lee and vice versa, and one of our other options at 6 get some minutes: Morales, Williams, Kitchen.

I love Bradley and Altidore, but think they need some fire under them, and the younger dudes, I’m just not certain about any of them yet.

    Reply
    • Also, don’t forget about Ream. He’s a starter at Fulham, has the best pass-out-of-the-back capabilities of all defenders, and is really solid. It’s too bad he never plays at CB, because I believe he’d be a slight upgrade to Besler (and I really like Besler and prefer him over all else but Cameron until Miazga arrives). Ream and Cameron would be a fantastically stable partnership.

  15. Since the U-23’s are hosting their own camp with 2 friendlies against Brazil, I don’t expect to see anyone from the Olympic age bracket outside Yedlin and Brooks. However, the squad does need to be freshened up with new/younger blood. For these reasons I hope we’ll see something along the following:
    Keepers: Guzan, Howard, Hamid
Defense: Shea, Fabian, Yedlin, Chandler, Cameron, Besler, Alvarado, Brooks
Midfield: Bradley, Jones, Morales, Williams, Nagbe, Finlay, Zardes, Lleget
    Strikers: Dempsey, Jozy, Wood, Agudelo
I’d like to see the following in the first match since it’s at home against a fairly weak opponent.

    ————————–Agudelo———————–
    —-Zardes—————-Nagbe————Lleget—
    —————-Morales————Bradley————
    —Shea———Besler———Cameron—-Yedlin–
    ————————–Guzan————————–
Keep Dempsey, Jozy & Jones off the field unless we are really struggling. Let them start in the 2nd match @ T&T. Sub in Wood & Finlay in the 2nd half against tired legs.

  16. I have USMNT fatigue- one can only be disappointed so much for so long. Watching these games is not enjoyable- at some point the repetition of mistimed runs and passes, blown defensive assignments and general lack of cohesiveness among the teammates wears thin.

Let’s get a new coach and sleepwalk to the WC like the USMNT had done for two decades, and then one day, when the roster is magically replenished with CL level players, maybe we can hire the genius coach back, since at that point the players will be worthy of his immense tactical savvy

    Reply
  17. No Dempsey and Altidore for this. Call some of under 23’s and new MLS players because USNT needs really new energy in the attack and creative types.

      • he’s not saying call up the whole team; just because a team doesn’t perform well doesn’t mean there aren’t any good players. if i recall correctly, every portugal youth team that cristiano ronaldo was on either didn’t qualify for their international tournament or bombed out in the group stage.

  18. I would love to see a team that did not have Jozy starting. We really need a better froward than him and JK needs to try other options. Those options are not named Wondo either

  20. I also agree that we should be able to have a more drastic overhaul of the roster. Obviously, the same old things have not been working and I think even with a newer roster we should be able to beat St. Vincent. I’d like to see Jordan Morris on this roster and I’d like to see Bobby Wood start up top with a Clint Dempsey.

  21. Only new player will probably be nagbe because of what Caleb Porter said the other day about hearing from JK . The others will be just younger ones that have already been called up in the past just not everytime. I was also like to know if there has been any contact with that kid playing at stade del reims in ligue 1

  22. Jones may not even be eligible, depending on what what MLS charges him with. I dont think JK will stray too far from his usual player set but if he’s going to do it, this is the time

Bradley is starting to look old. JK better start thinking about who will replace him and that person is not Mix or Bedoya

    • There is some real talent on u23s at the CM position with Hyndman and Zelalem although young they could be called up for the copa next summer if they fail to get in Olympics and then slowly earn mins and take the CM spots in late 2016 early to mid 2017 and be ready for Russia. Listen I know u23 team struggled but there are a few that will be with senior team very shortly and will contribute just wish there was a LB out there.

      Reply
      • I agree with you. I think too many people are discounting a bunch of these young guys just because they couldn’t qualify. I’m not saying they are world beaters, or that they all have bright futures in the MNT, but I wasn’t too impressed with their coach.

Coach vs Player influence on the performance of a team is a big debate. Certainly the players have more influence over outcomes, but I think the coach determines 30-40%. A coach has the plan, and determines who will best go where to execute that plan. That doesn’t mean he can’t mold players into something they naturally aren’t, either. A good coach can get a trickster to play one touch with zest, or an attacker to stay back and distribute with pride. A bad coach either won’t inspire that player to play differently/in a different position, or they will inspire them, but not get the preparation or tactics right, and thenceforth they’re going to struggle to inspire that player to buy in all the way.

  23. i like the return of Agudelo and Nguyen – two guys that look like they are finally ready for bigger roles on the team.

Like everyone else here would say, Don’t stop there! Nagbe and Lletget over Jones and Altidore; Hedges and Finlay over Brooks and Yedlin (should be on the U23s), I would even give McCarty or Kitchen a shot over Mix or Sean Berry over Chandler.

WCQ is never easy and we need top players to get a result in T&T but we need a lot of new blood and guys in good form (and still in season) in the team. The next two games followed by January camp should be a more than adequate time to bring in a lot of new faces.

    Reply
  24. would much rather see Nagbe and Finlay then Wooten or Mix. and while Brooks will most certainly be called up, given he also has not played significant minutes in awhile, i’d rather him be with the U-23s.

  25. I feel like now is the time to move to a 4-2-3-1. We now have the wingers (Nagbe, Finlay, Wooten, Johnson, Zardes) that we didn’t have last time and the attacking midfielders (Nguyen, and later Pulisic, Hyndman, Zelalem). Allow Bradley to move back into his best box-to-box role and any of Altidore, Agudelo, or Wood to grow into the lone striker role. Also lets move Yedlin back to RB and start grooming him there. Johnson is more effective as an attacker (once this whole feud blows over) and Yedlin in playing well (pretty well) for Sunderland at RB.

    Reply
    • Yedlin at RB and Fabian in the midfield makes perfect sense, considering that is where they play with their clubs. But Klinsy has a hard on for Yedlin in the MF and most likely has Feilhabered Johnson.

As for Finlay, Nagbe…he has to run them into the ground in a January camp before deciding whether to banish them or not. Won’t call them in.

      • Did people not see Shea in the Costa Rica friendly?? He was poor at best and I’m a Brek fan. Shea is not in form at the moment and needs time to reach the level we saw before he got injured, but that’s not to say you don’t bring him in because he should be there but not starting. You put Ream in that spot because he’s been one of our better defenders for a few months now on top of being a stalwart at Fulham. Now, Tim won’t wow you going forward but he silky on the ball, can pick out a great pass and more importantly does his job on the back end…..the rest if the lineup looks great

      • “Agudelo has been the poster boy for ‘inconsistent’. He scores ONE nice bicycle and you want to hand him the keys to the team? lol”

Totally agree! Have we not learned anything from the Julian Green debacle? So many were head over heels over Green because of one good run/goal despite not showing sustained international caliber form before, during, or since the World Cup.

Give Agudelo time to become a consistent starter and show sustained quality before rushing him back into the USMNT.

      • It has nothing to do with his bicycle kick. I agree about his consistency, but many of us have always liked Agudelo, myself included, and we don’t have a lot of other options at the moment, especially if we are trying to get younger and play with more creativity. Now that Jozy isn’t playing inspired at all, and AJ and Boyd and Rubin are hurt, and Dempsey is getting old, people are going to want to start reaching down a bit further to test our deeper players.

I think Wood, Morris, and Agudelo are the next best three, and that we should want to get a better look at them together, maybe even Ibarra again.

        Slightly OT:
I never liked Brek Shea–felt he was incapable of putting it all together on a consistent basis–but if he starts to play well, we should test him again. Same goes with Sacha. I actually kind of liked Mix, but he’s been failing his tests on the reg, so he needs to go until he can get his act straight.

        Very OT:
Too many soccer fans on here do this:

“I disagree with you about something, therefore you must be ignorant in some way. Here is why I think that. . .”

I don’t like to read what comes next, because I know where a debate goes with someone who considers themself infallible.

  26. I think most posters will be looking for more changes than what’s proposed there. I mean, Jermaine Jones? Thank you for your service, you were stellar in Brazil, but we need to move on. Dempsey could probably stand to take a break. I think the defensive group is ok. And I’d love for Benny to be brought in (I know, not gonna happen). But more than anything, I want Nguyen to actually be given a start, not 15 minutes at the end, when he can’t be properly evaluated.

I mean, we should win both of these games handily, I think we can move away from JJ and Deuce for

    Reply
    • I agree that JJ is done, and that Dempsey doesn’t fit right now. If we had another hybrid forward that he could develop chemistry with, it could work, but it’s hard to imagine him fitting in with anyone in the pool right now, and he is slower and older. I also think we should give a break to Jozy and Bradley. I’ve defended both of those guys right up until our last USMNT game, but they’ve been. . . not so good for club or country in awhile. Still great prospects for our 2018 team, but let’s have a look elsewhere, and hopefully light a fire under them.

Benny and Lee both do sort of the same things in my mind, so as long as one of them is called in, I will be content. They are really are only true number 10’s until you get down to the teenagers who are probably not ready, nor as good.

      Reply
  27. I would like to Wooten as a right winger like he has spent most of his club mins there this season. Want yedlin at rb and wouldn’t mind seeing nagbe call up. So swap nagbe for nyugen.

    Reply
    • I see Nagbe as more of a lethal box-to-box number 8. Benny and Lee are stereotypical attacking mids, and are best options there, unless we want to go with the teenage dudes, and if we decide to play that way. In a 4-3-3, I think Nagbe should be an 8–getting the ball behind the halfway line, beating a man or two, then kicking it out to the 10 or the wings and making a smart run.

      Reply
  28. It may be time for a more drastic overhaul of the roster. Lets get some new younger players that are in form and bring them in earlier than usual. Maybe Nagbe, Lletget, Finlay. Guys that haven’t got a shot for the US yet but do have some experience to go along with talent.

    Reply
      • In a 4-3-3, I’ll take Trapp/Morales/Williams over Kitchen at the 6–as far as who I want to see–but he is probably 4th for me, and moves up that list playing at the back of a midfield diamond, where you want your 6 to be more of a hard-nosed, primarily defensive kind of guy. I agree that Kitchen is probably our best prospect as a one for one replacement for Beckerman, but Trapp seems like the more intriguing player for a pressing, creative side.

      • I’d rather have McCarty than Kitchen, because McCarty has the technical ability and vision to be an outlet for possession and can make incisive long balls. Kitchen, truthfully, is nowhere near Dax’s technical range.
