Rangers set to extend Gedion Zelalem loan until end of season

Gedion Zelalem Rangers 21

Gedion Zelalem’s stay with Rangers is set to be extended further than originally planned.

Rangers manager Mark Warburton revealed on Sunday that the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team midfielder will remain with the club through the remainder of the 2015-16 season. Zelalem originally joined the Scottish second division club in the summer on a deal that was to expire in January, but the new agreement means Zelalem can build on his 11 made appearances this season.

“Gedion is staying with us,”Warburton said. “We talked to Arsenal. That’s an on-going process.”

Zelalem is currently on loan from Arsenal, the English Premier League side for which he has featured twice in the two seasons prior to this one.

As well as his recent efforts on the club level, the 18-year-old midfielder featured in the Under-20 World Cup and in CONCACAF Olympic qualifying in 2015.

What do you think of the impending decision to keep Zelalem at Rangers? What have you seen from his loan deal so far? How will he fare as the season continues?

  1. Dude just doesn’t have a good work rate to me, he’s like Hadji Wright fantastic when playing against teens but older competition they truly look weak.

  2. Good for him, although Rangers fans will be upset. They have been very harsh with his performances and have been clamoring for him to be benched. Mostly fans ask that he grow a pair. He is weak in defense and holds the ball too much. He shows often for the ball and helps with possession, but looks like he’s training during most games. He really needs a breakthrough in the next few games or he may face the bench for a while.

  3. Love it. Great place for him to develop and become a physically stronger player. His lack of strength was a weakness in U20 WC and actually playing against the brutes in Scotland on a team that I assume will be promoted should help.

  4. Good growth experience for him. Hopefully a stepping stone to greater challenges. The playing time, the coaching, the living in another country and maturing – it’s all good from where I sit.
