Following the departure of Raul, the New York Cosmos are in the market for another big-name forward. That forward will not be Georgios Samaras.
The 30-year-old Greek international is a free agent and had been training with the Cosmos throughout October. However, sources tell SBI that the Cosmos will not be signing Samaras ahead of the 2016 season.
Samaras, who most recently featured for Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal while on loan from West Brom, has made 81 appearances for the Greek national team while featuring in two World Cups and two European Championships. Samaras’ biggest successes came as a member of Scottish club Celtic, for whom he made 171 appearances and scored 57 goals during a seven-year stay that yielded four Scottish League titles.
The forward has recently been linked with a move to Australia, according to the Daily Telegraph, with the Central Coast Mariners reportedly registering interest in Samaras’ services.
Following Raul’s retirement, the Cosmos currently boast Lucky Mkosana and David Diosa as the club’s forward options, while the club continues negotiations with NASL final hero Gaston Cellerino.
What do you think of the news? Who would you like to see the Cosmos go after to replace Raul?
