The first internal free-agent signing in MLS history was made on Monday.
Sporting Kansas City has announced the addition of midfielder Justin Mapp, who joins the club after spending four years plying his trade with the Montreal Impact. Mapp was a free agent this offseason per the terms agreed to in the latest Collective Bargaining Agreement.
“Sporting Kansas City has always been a team and organization I have respected, and now I am very happy to be a part of it and play in front of such passionate fans,” Mapp said in a prepared statement. “I am thankful and appreciative for my time at Montreal, and I’m looking forward to the 2016 season in Kansas City.”
Inclduing postseason figures, the 31-year-old midfielder has recorded 23 goals and provided 70 assists. Prior to joining the Impact, he spent two years with the Philadelphia Union and seven seasons with the Chicago Fire.
In 2015, Mapp only logged 264 minutes with the Impact as he recovered from surgery on his left arm.
“Adding an experienced player of Justin’s caliber is a great start to our offseason,” Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes said in the same statement. “He fits very well into our model of play and brings a lot of qualities that will help us reach our goals next season.”

Wait! Mapp has been in the league since he was 18? I’m glad that after 13 years of play he earned the right to determine where he finishes his career
