Sunday Ticker: Real Madrid falls to Villarreal; Arsenal tops EPL; and more

An early finish from Roberto Soldado proved to be just enough for Villarreal to topple Real Madrid on Sunday afternoon.

Soldado’s eighth-minute finish led the way for the Yellow Submarine, who held on for a 1-0 win that keeps the club in fifth on La Liga’s table. Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s loss sees the club remain third, five points behind Barcelona.

Assisted by Cédric Bakambu, Soldado’s finish proved little more than a tap-in. Free in the center of the box, Bakambu simply slid a pass to the former Tottenham forward, who coolly finished first-time to seal all three points.

Here’s a closer look at some more of Sunday’s news and notes from around the soccer world:

ARSENAL GOES TOP OF EPL WITH WIN

At least for the time being, Arsenal sits atop the English Premier League table.

Led by goals from Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey, the Gunners moved to the top of the standings with a thorough 2-0 victory over relegation candidates Aston Villa. With the win, Arsenal sits one point above Manchester City and Leicester City, the latter of which faces off with Chelsea on Monday afternoon.

Giroud’s goal came in just the eighth minute, as the Frenchman kept his hot streak alive from the penalty spot after referee Kevin Friend called a much-delayed penalty against Alan Hutton for a foul on Theo Walcott. Ramsey’s finish served as insurance as the Welshman tapped in a Mesut Ozil pass for Arsenal’s second of the game.

CLUB AMERICA ELIMINATED FROM CLUB WORLD CUP

Club America’s run through the Club World Cup came to an end as a result of a late stoppage-time goal.

Tied 1-1 in the 93rd minute, Guangzhou Evergrande midfielder Paulinho earned his side a victory with a late-game header, sealing a 2-1 victory that knocked the CONCACAF Champions League winners out of the tournament in the quarterfinal round. With the win, the Chinese club seals a matchup with tournament favorites Barcelona.

It was the Mexican side that opened the scoring in the 10th minute, as Oribe Peralta gave Club America the ideal start to the quarterfinal clash. Substitute Zheng Long equalized in the 80th minute, paving the way for Paulinho’s header in the final minute of stoppage time.

In other Club World Cup action, Japan’s Sanfrecce Hiroshima topped the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s TP Mazembe to seal a semifinal clash with Argentinian giant River Plate.
