European Weekend Preview: FA Cup, Zidane era begins, and more

While the German Bundesliga remains on sabbatical for two more weeks, the English FA Cup continues this weekend with the Round of 64, and the competition will heat up with the introduction of both Premier League and Championship clubs.

Five all-Premier League match-ups will take center stage in the competition’s third round, including Tottenham Hotspur battling Leicester City on Sunday. Claudio Ranieri’s side has proven to be more than just a pest this season in league competition, and Leicester can now turn its attention to an FA Cup title run, which will likely be a more reasonable aspiration this season.

In Spain, the Zinedine Zidane-era will begin at the Santiago Bernabeu this weekend, as Real Madrid hosts Deportivo La Coruña. The Madridistas are four points out of the top spot in La Liga, while Deportivo can move into the top-six with a victory on Saturday.

ENGLISH FA CUP

While the big guns will return to England’s biggest tournament, the beauty of the FA Cup has always been the fact that any side, regardless of division, can make an impact.

Exeter City vs. Liverpool

The round kicks off on Friday with League 2 club Exeter City hosting Premier League giants Liverpool. Exeter has advanced to the quarterfinals twice in its history; however, the last time the Grecians made it that far was back during the 1980-81 season.

Southampton vs. Crystal Palace

Southampton may finally be feeling the affects of losing a large portion of its big names, including Morgan Schneiderlin and Luke Shaw, however Ronald Koeman’s team can certainly put up a fight against Crystal Palace, which currently sits seventh in the EPL.

Hull City vs. Brighton and Hove Albion

Championship sides Hull City and Brighton will meet on Saturday, although both of their sights for the season will likely be on jumping up to the Premier League. Hull and Brighton currently occupy top-four positions in the Championship, sitting third and fourth respectively.

SPANISH LA LIGA

Following Granada’s surprising victory over Sevilla last weekend, the 17th-place side will look to keep its good fortunes going on Saturday against Barcelona. The Blaugrana, currently second in La Liga, hold a game in hand over leaders Atletico Madrid, which will travel to Celta Vigo.

Levante and Rayo Vallecano will look to creep off the bottom of the league, with both clubs currently sitting in relegation spots. Rayo, 19th in La Liga, sits four points above last-place Levante, which has just two wins during the 2015-16 campaign.

Meanwhile, last place Hellas Verona will host bottom-half side Palermo. Verona, who have yet to win a match this season, sits eight points buried beneath the relegation line at this stage of the season.
