Los Angeles FC may have stolen the spotlight in the city with its crest announcement on Thursday, but reports out of Italy have a Dutch international linked to the five-time MLS Cup champions.

According to multiple reports in Italy, the LA Galaxy are reportedly interested in acquiring 31-year-old midfielder Nigel Del Jong from Serie A side AC Milan. Goal USA also reported that the MLS side is in talks to bring him across the Atlantic.

De Jong has not featured much for Milan during the 2015-16 campaign, and the report goes on to say that he is currently considering the move.

Reports in England have De Jong linked with a possible move to Leicester City, but according to Leicester Mercury, the second-placed English Premier League side is not interested.

Milan currently sits seventh on the Italian table with 28 points through 18 games, five of which De Jong started. Since his international debut in 2004, De Jong has made 81 appearances for the Netherlands, including a start in the 2010 World Cup final against Spain.

What do you think of this report? Would De Jong be a good fit with the Galaxy should he join?

  1. He will be an excellent addition to the Galaxy. AND, they are getting him on a non-DP basis. His passing is excellent, on par with Juninho as a defensive mid. He is 31 which is A LOT younger than Drogba. As far as his tackling goes, he is not a malicious player, and is less exuberant than his earlier days AND he hasn’t bitten anyone!

This player was with the Dutch in TWO World Cups, in which they finished 2nd and 3rd.

We have spent more money on American players to get back to the MLS, that were nowhere as good. It’s quite common to acquire goog players who are out of favor, who were benched in favor of a coach’s favorite player, or didn’t fit the style of the team. If he signs, it will an excellent pickup for the Galaxy.

  2. LOL this is so funny how people hate the idea that Galaxy is trying to build a team that can compete with the South of the Border MX league Teams. If the Rumors are true will be a good team at least to win the ConcafChamp. Check this player will be have Zarde, Keane, larentowicz, Gerrard, Gio Do Santos, De Jong, Kennedy Stable Goalie, Robbie Rogers, De la Garza, and I heard that Galaxy is looking at Ashley Cole or Lescott. Now we have a team that will be able to play against team from MX league and what if it win the Concafchampion they play against the like of UEFA Champs. Or Libertadores Champ

This is MLS and Bruce Arena. I don’t think he or the league care to compete with Liga MX in Champions League based on the line-ups they put out there during group/elimination play.

    • I understand what you saying playing in the group stage but the Galaxy is going to play against Santos Laguna not in the group stage but is a win or go home situation. I think they are in the quarter finals. Plus the Galaxy already won the league 5 times is time to win something else don’t you think? and I think Bruce and the Galaxy and the MLS want that.

  3. Putting aside what he did to Holden, I don’t understand the hate for this move, from a LAG perspective or league perspective. 31 is hardly too old (in contrast to Lampard, for example, at 36) and this guy has played at the highest levels, internationally and club-wise. He’s also a highly mobile destroyer who would be perfect covering behind an aging Gerrard, giving Gerrard the freedom to quarterback and move forward. I’m not concerned at all by the fact he’s currently out of favor at Milan — he surely could move many other places. I’m not an LAG fan, but I think this guy could be a fantastic signing. My two cents.

  4. Yeah that dude is never going to be welcome here. Lack of remorse after the stu injury isn’t going to be forgotten any time soon. says here this signing would backfire for the Galaxy with them being a less attractive team to out of area US soccer fans (I would often root for them because their form had an impact on USMNT form).

  5. Nigel De Jong can go F himself. I go to about 5-8 home games a year (used to have STs), i will never go again if they sign this dbag. Dude never apologized to Stu for breaking his freaking leg with a dirty tackle. F him forever.

  6. Why does LA keep getting linked to some of my least favorite players in Europe? I can’t stand that guy. I do not look forward to watching him go Cobra Chi all over MLS

  7. Not sure what to make of it as he’d be a great compliment to Gerrard but Gerrard has already stated his desire to leave after next season.

  8. Between him, gerrard and larentowicz there will no safe legs around the league. Let the reign of terror beguin. I hate this thug and yes i am a galaxy supporter.

  10. LA has a lot of young talent coming down the pipeline. Moreover, they have the means to get more. It seems to me that this team is being built with experience to win the Champions League.
    Anyone?

    • Well, he will certainly be able to handle the physicality of MLS. Anybody attempting a header in front of goal will certainly think twice if de Jong is back there. Seriously, I’ve never liked the guy and hope the Galaxy don’t get him. They are making it hard to root for this team.

  11. I think it is a poor decision because of his age and lack of playing time. It reinforces the “retirement fc” nickname. Why does the Galaxy consistently refuse to look at younger talent?

    • Lack of play time and age you say???
You have players like Sebastian Giovinco (28) who was constantly loaned out or rode pine at Juventus then comes to MLS and dominates our league.
you have players like Didier Drogba (37) who was on the bench for Chelsea because of age but comes to our league with more impact in less time than our lead US striker and is pullout by Chelsea to be retired (yes retired).
Robbie Keane is 35, David Villa is 34, Kaka is 33, Dempsey is 32, Kei Kamara is 31,Obafemi Martins is 31, Feilhaber is 30, Bradley Wright-Phillips is 30 and these players are on top as far as talent in this league. 4 of the 5 leading goal scorers last season where all foreign and over 30.
So I think lets stop worrying about age and playing time and worry about if they can raise the talent and technical level and work rate of our league.

      • Milan isn’t the team they once were. It isn’t like he isn’t getting playing time for Juve or Chelsea. Also feel like he would get the same level of hate that Marquez got with the whole breaking multiple players legs and karate kicking Xabi Alonso. He is one of the world’s dirtiest players.
