Due to player injuries, U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has had to make a few changes to his January camp roster.

On Friday, U.S. Soccer announced that Stanford fullback Brandon Vincent, as well as San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham, D.C. United defender Steven Birnbaum and Perry Kitchen, will join the U.S. camp.

The additions make up for the withdrawals of San Jose Earthquakes players Fatai Alashe and Marc Pelosi, as they are both recovering from injuries.

The senior call-up is the first for Bingham and Vincent, while Birnbaum and Kitchen were both members in last year’s edition of the January camp.

The Americans will train from Jan. 11 to Feb. 6, and compete in two friendlies. On Jan. 31, the U.S. will host Iceland at StubHub Center in Carson, California. Klinsmann’s men will then play Canada on Feb. 5.

What do you think of the new additions? Who do you think will make the most impact among the quartet?

  1. I dont get it at all. I would think JK would call in two teams. A U23 based team and a senior team based team. Then they could scrimmage each other. He has too few to even have a full scrimmage plus he’s calling in college players over MLS players that can contribute. What is the matter with him. Let his buddy Herzog run the young ones then come together for scrimmages. There is NO college defender that is better than Andrew Farrell and the snub of Agudelo while continuing so showcase Jozy the log is beyond belief

    • Agudelo scored 7 times in 32 games while Altidore scored 13 times in 25 games in MLS. Jozy averages a goal for the Nats once every 3 games Agudelo scores once every 7. The grass is not always greener. Jozy is also there to work with the young guys Shelton, Kiesewetter, Morris, Finlay, and Zardes, if you bring in another young player instead of Jozy there is no veteran leader to lead the forwards.

Vincent is being brought in as basically his trial for the U23 playoff as I don’t think he was part of qualifying or the Brazil trip and Farrell is too old i believe for that.

And finally, if you notice the camp lost 2 players, but gained 4 so more players are being added and yes some more may leave. So yes at times they wont be able to go 11 on 11, but most coaches across any sport will tell you, you don’t get a lot out of scrimmaging yourselves over and over.

      • Good points. Never know with Vincent, I’m sure the coaching staff has seen enough of Stanford play this year and they might see something in him. Obvious that fullback is the position in need. Polster and Acosta should be trying out for RB, Vincent and Miller at LB. With that said should have no problem going 11v11 or training with some real interesting position battles.

      • …..and Chris Wondolowski has scored 105 goals in 190 matches in MLS (16 this past season compared to Altidore’s 13) but you don’t see the Nats falling over him. if just goals was the decider they we’ll be talking about Wondo. Agudelo has much more talent than Altidore and its clearly visible in the quality of the goals they score

      • Bizzy and that’s why Wondo has continually been called in over the last five years. He scores goals and they are usually ugly. Agudelo scored an amazing bicycle kick goal, but guess how much it counted, 1. The same as any other goal, one amazing goal is still not as good as a tap in and a penalty kick (you know because Jozy scores twice as often as Juan). Jozy has out played Agudelo in MLS, in Holland, and at least Jozy could get a work permit in England. The two have had nearly identical career paths which makes it pretty easy to see who is able to get better results. Jozy has scored 18 goals in 37 matches over the last three years with Nats, only Dempsey has been better with 18 in 28.

Don’t like Jozy fine, like to make fun because his name shares two consonants with the word lazy fine, but he gets results (scores at nearly the same pace for the USMNT as LD 2.75 per game to.2.87 only Demps is better 2.5 and no one else in USMNT history is under 3.12).

And yes on the national team Jozy is a leader. He is well respected by his peers and although not successful in England has played both in Europe and MLS and is the third most capped player out of the current player pool behind Dempsey and Bradley. (4th if you still count Beas)

    • Farrell is vastly overrated at this point in his career. I was very high on his as a prospect in his rookie year, but that was as an outside back. He is not steady enough to be a great center back, but he has the motor and athleticism to be an elite outside back. He is good enough technically to be good in that role now, and if he had developed more there, he has the physical tools to be a Dani Alves type. I am off of him as a big time prospect at this point due to his position change, his lack of technical development, and the way it appears he put on weight.

  2. Why are we even calling in U-23 players to camp when they are not even doing exceptionally well at their level?
Why aren’t we calling in seasoned professionals like Benny Feilhaber, Sasha Klesjan, Dax McCarthy, Mike Grella, Sebastian Lletget, Lee Nyugen, Juan Agudelo, Harry Shipp, Matt Hedges, Robbie Rogers, Jorge VillafaƱa, Victor Ulloa, Andrew Farrell etc?
Let the up and coming US players develop together and pick players doing well in our league.

    • The one that really kind of annoys me is Agudelo. You see he clearly has the skill and ability but just can’t quite put it all together. I feel like the he’s the one player that could really use a month under a former great striker like Klinsmann and learn something.

    • It was stated a couple of weeks ago they were going to bring in some of the U-23s to get them extra work with NT coaches leading up to the playoff.

Benny, Sasha, and Dax are all known quantities and as has been said here a hundred considered too old by the current regime. You can bang your head about it every time there is a call up or you can just except it.

Grella had a good season, but at 28 is at the high end and doesn’t fit positionally with what the US has been trying to do.

Lletget struggled the last three months of the season, after Zardes returned and Gio and Gerrard joined so not entirely his fault.

I’m pretty sure Nyugen is on the roster.

Agudelo doesn’t even regularly start for NE, but I like Jack’s point.

Robbie Rogers is not good. Sorry he’s just not, I understand we have no outside backs on the roster, but no to Robbie.

Villafana just joined Santos so you wouldn’t want to pull him from his new team that is beginning their season.

      • Benny, Dax and Sasha are all just 30 and are considered too old by this regime but the likes of Brad Evans, Beckerman, Wondo JJ Rimando continue to get called in so that makes sense smdh. Further proof that this regime has no clue.
