Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

Aron Johannsson has not appeared in a game for Werder Bremen in nearly five months, but that spell of inactivity could come to an end this Saturday against a fellow American.

Werder Bremen is set to pay a visit to FC Ingolstadt in the upcoming round of the German Bundesliga, and the match could mark the return of Johannsson. The veteran forward has been out of action since Sept. 22 because of a hip injury, and he is surely champing at the bit to get back on the field in some capacity after returning to training earlier this month. Johannsson might have to go up against another U.S. Men’s National Team player if he does earn some minutes, as Alfredo Morales is a regular contributor for Ingolstadt.

Tim Howard is another player who will be aiming to snap an appearance drought. Howard has not played for Everton since Jan. 24, but could put a halt to that forgettable streak on Saturday when the club visits AFC Bournemouth in the FA Cup. The Toffees are eyeing a place in the quarterfinals of the tournament, but will need to do a better job of finishing than they did in last weekend’s disappointing defeat to West Bromwich Albion if they are to advance.

While both Howard and Johannssson are hoping to get back in the mix for their respective teams, Christian Pulisic is looking to make another appearance for Borussia Dortmund. Pulisic has played in each of Borussia Dortmund’s last three games, and will attempt to earn more minutes when the club grapples with Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.
