Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

Danny Williams Reading 13

Danny Williams and Reading might be facing a really short turnaround, but they have every reason to get up for their next game.

Williams and Reading will continue their dream run in the FA Cup on Friday when they take on English Premier League side Crystal Palace in a quarterfinals bout at home. The Royals are eyeing the tournament’s trophy after getting so close to the finish line, but have the challenge of needing to overcome a quick turnaround. Reading played an English Championship tilt on Tuesday, and will have to dig deep and push past tired legs in order to knock off a better-rested Crystal Palace squad that has not played since this past Sunday.

Bobby Wood might not be competing in a tournament match this weekend, but he is seeking to extend his current scoring streak in the 2. Bundesliga. Wood has netted in his last four matches for FC Union Berlin, and might be able to add another game to that impressive stretch when the club visits MSV Duisburg on Saturday. The U.S. Men’s National Team striker seems to have a good shot at finding the back of the net, too, as cellar dweller Duisburg has not won in nine straight games and has gone six matches in a row without recording a shutout.

While Wood will be hoping for goals, Ethan Horvath certainly will not as he returns to action. Horvath and Molde FK kick off their Eliteserien campaign on Sunday with a showdown at home against Tromso, and the 20-year-old goalkeeper will be keen on getting off to a good start ahead of the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team’s Olympic Qualifying Playoff vs. Colombia at the end of the month. Horvath and his club have the advantage of entering this game with some competitive minutes under their belt, as they recently took on Sevilla in a pair of UEFA Europa League encounters.
