Niko Kranjcar has been training with the New York Cosmos throughout the preseason, and the veteran has now made his stay with the club official, at least on a short-term basis.
The former Tottenham and Portsmouth midfielder has signed a deal with the Cosmos for the NASL Spring Season. The 31-year-old had previously been a free agent after leaving Dynamo Kiev following a lengthy loan stint with Queens Park Rangers.
“I’ve enjoyed my time training with the Cosmos, working with these players and coaches has been a great experience,” Kranjcar said. “I think the style of play here suits me well, I and I’m excited to officially represent the club on the field this season.”
“Niko is not only a world class player, but also a fantastic human being,” added Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese. “He has elite vision and technical ability with the ball at his feet, and we’re confident he can bring creativity to our approach in the attacking half of the field.”
Kranjcar’s signing provides further depth for the Cosmos, who recently lost centerback Roversio to a knee injury.
In Kranjcar, the Cosmos have added a six-year English Premier League veteran. In addition, Kranjcar has represented Croatia 81 times while featuring on one World Cup and two European Championship rosters.
What do you think of the Kranjcar signing? How will he fit in with the Cosmos? Expect him to stay for longer than the Spring Season?
