Russell Canouse makes Bundesliga debut in Hoffenheim win

After earning promotion to the senior Hoffenheim team this week, Russell Canouse made his German Bundesliga debut on Saturday.

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann substituted the 20-year-old American on for Chilean international Eduardo Vargas in the 67th minute with the 1-0 lead vs. Wolfsburg. The U.S. Under-20 National Team midfielder helped his side hold onto that lead for the crucial three points, as the club is currently in the midst of a relegation battle.

Thanks to a third-minute goal from Andrej Kramaric at the Rhein-Neckar Arena, Hoffenheim is now level on points (24) with Eintracht Frankfurt. However, Eintracht is still third from bottom.

Canouse contributed one tackle after coming on for Nagelsmann’s side, making 13 touches and seven passes — with only one misplaced pass.

What do you think of Canouse’s debut? What are you expecting from him in 2016 and beyond? Think he should be called into the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team to play Colombia?

  1. It’s heartbreaking to see all these young players waste their chance to become the next Clint Dempsey by not spending some time in MLS first.

    • Doesn’t seem like much of a waste to me considering he, Pulisic, Parker, Yedlin, etc are playing first team football in Europe and only between the ages of 17-22. I think Clint went to Europe when he was already 25, that’s a big difference.

      • Oops, that sarcasm went right over my head. It’s kind of hard to tell nowadays considering fans on this site don’t agree with a lot of our youth players going abroad to start their careers.

      • Don’t worry. It’s usually tough to figure out what Rob is talking about. The only thing that’s clear is that he loves El Tri and hates the USMNT and MLS.

  2. I was impressed with this kid in the run-up to the U-20 WC. If not for his training injury he could have had played a significant role with the team. His ability to shield the defense and passing from deep would have allowed Zelalem & Hyndmann more freedom.
Looking forward to the future when Stanko, Canouse Zelalem, & Hyndmann are truly part of the conversation for the Sr. USMNT. Guessing it will be after 2018 WC.
