Sounders sign former USMNT striker Herculez Gomez

After starting the season 0-3 and only scoring two goals, the Seattle Sounders have added a veteran presence at striker position.

The club announced on Thursday the signing of former U.S. Men’s National Team forward Herculez Gomez, who most recently played with Toronto FC in 2015.

“Herculez is a veteran player who has played in some big games,” said Sounders FC Head Coach Sigi Schmid. “I look forward to his team play, hard-working attitude and his goal scoring as an addition to our team.”

Prior to joining TFC last season, the 33-year-old Gomez spent six years in Mexico, where he played for many clubs. Gomez featured for Puebla, Pachuca and Santos Laguna, among others during his stint in Liga MX.

The forward began his MLS career in 2002, playing for the LA Galaxy. He was sent out on loan to the Sounders the next season, when the club was still in the USL First Division.

What do you think of the Gomez signing? How big of a role do you see him having?

  1. Not sure I know of a USMNT striker with a better work rate than Herc. Watching him chasing down balls and actually pressuring the defense is a joy to watch. It’s too late for Clint, but please learn something Jordan.

  2. Clint Dempsey and Herculez Gomez reuniting and playing up top for Sounders should be a really good partnership with a lot of team Chemistry. A real steal for Seattle…excited

  3. Wait a minute….”former” USMNT striker.

Someone please correct the author of this article. Everyone knows that Hercules Gomez is a USMNT player, not a “former” USMNT player. There is no such thing as a “former” USMNT player. Once a USMNT player, always a USMNT player.

OK…now that I got that off my chest.

Good signing by Seattle. Always liked Gomez. Maybe Seattle’s answer to the Galaxy’s Alan Gordon? I hope not..

  4. Let’s hope his contract had a clause to never let him dye his hair like that again. Moving south of the border brought the weird out in Herc.

    • Lol…. if by weird, you mean goalscoring- I guess you are correct. Come to think of it…. unfortunately goalscoring with consistency could be viewed as different for a US striker.

      • He’s scored 2 goals combined the last three seasons so its been awhile since this consistency you speak of. (12 counting cup goals)

    • When you lead the league in goals, do your hair however you want! (Tied w Chicharito but scored more per minutes played).
