New York City FC may have been up a man for a majority of the second half, but Patrick Vieira’s side couldn’t find a goal to separate itself from the New England Revolution on Saturday afternoon.

Tommy McNamara’s opening goal was canceled out by a Chris Tierney finish, and NYCFC was unable to top the 10-man Revs in a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. With the draw, NYCFC sits on five points through four games, while the Revs earn their third point of the season.

NYCFC started the game on the front foot, as David Villa’s third-minute effort on goal was parried away by Bobby Shuttleworth. Seven minutes later, the Revs goalkeeper was left helpless as McNamara fired NYCFC into the lead.

Following a creative series of play between Andoni Iraola and Tony Taylor, Villa was fed the ball in the box before rocketing a shot off the crossbar. McNamara pounced, heading in from inside the six to give NYCFC the 1-0 lead.

Tierney found the visitors’ equalizer in the 39th minute by rocketing in a free kick. Following a foul just outside of the box, Tierney’s shot deflected off the wall and past Josh Saunders to send the teams into the locker room on level terms.

Six minutes into the second half, NYCFC was handed an advantage as Revs midfielder Gershon Koffie was sent off for a foul in the midfield. However, the Revs proved to be the more active team throughout the second 45, but failed to produce a difference-making goal.

Following the draw, NYCFC returns to action April 10 against the Chicago Fire, while the Revs host the New York Red Bulls at Gillette Stadium April 1.

MAN OF THE MATCH

With his side down a man for an extended period of time, Andrew Farrell made several key clearances from inside the final third. Even with the numbers advantage, NYCFC never truly threatened as Farell and the Revs backline kept things tight throughout the second half.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH

In all alone on Josh Saunders, Charlie Davies opted to attempt to round the NYCFC goalkeeper rather than fire a shot. The decision proved costly, as Jason Hernandez cleared the shot off the line to put an end to the Revs’ best chance after going down to 10 men.

MATCH TO FORGET

The start of Steven Mendoza’s NYCFC career has generally been bright, but the Colombian did not put forth his best performance on Saturday afternoon. Mendoza’s flicked-on header directly caused ]the Revs’ lone goal and the NYCFC winger’s defensive effort let to his substitution in the 67th minute.
