Task one, complete.

After the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team secured a 1-1 draw in South America on Friday, along with a critical away goal, Andi Herzog’s team returns to American soil for the second leg.

The match will kick off from Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas (9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2).

Luis Gil’s goal in the sixth minute gives the U.S. a massive lifeline heading into the return leg, however, Colombia’s dangerous attack will certain test the wills of the American players.

  1. Dreadful game for American soccer in a number ways. Awful coach, uncomposed players, beaten in every aspect by a team better constructed and by better developed players, and to top it off, Moreno condoning what every casual fan hates about the sport. Big step back after earlier success in the same night.

  2. I’m not angry or sad about this result. Colombia was far superior in every single aspect. Pathetic display by an absolutely dreadful U.S. team. Not a single U.S. player would start for that Colombian team. The yanks did not deserve to go to the Olympics. As soon as they lost to Honduras in the Concacaf tourney, it was pretty much over.

    • You’re right on your points, but you’re being too hyperbolic. If they were “far superior” and we were “absolutely dreadful”, how did the two-leg series end 3-2? Calm down.

  3. Does anyone else find Alejandro Moreno annoying as an announcer. He makes no comments about the blatant diving and cheap shots from the Colombians and claims any behavior from the US that approaches the Colombian behavior deserves a red card.

  4. Hyndman again showing he’s the only player who truly belongs. Payne played well but had mistakes. Unimpressed with acosta and Trapp. Polster just isn’t good enough. Miazga and Morris both had a terrible series for supposedly the two biggest players on the team. Rodriguez was active but accomplished little. All and all pretty dissapointed

  5. We probably should’ve ended this game with 6 men … boys, I should say. Unacceptable loss of composure from too many. Yeah, the Colombians are skilled at getting under your skin and playing the mental game, but that’s not a good excuse.

Finally, we should be proud of this result in some sense. Losing 3-2 to Colombia over two games isn’t some kind of black eye. It’s much better than most expected, actually.

    • We had like one shot on goal in both games combined and generally embarrassed yourself. I’m not proud of any aspect of this you can keep your aggregate score line

      • I think you have unrealistic expectations about how good our team is in comparison to theirs. Did we play a bit too defensively/pragmatically at times? Yeah, but it almost worked.

      • We stomped on the other team….twice. One shot on goal in 180 mins. I’m glad these guys are staying home

  6. Worst player by far over the two legs was Matt Miazga (Acosta had his problems but frankly he took on harder challenges….). Red card was icing on the ugly cake. Welcome back to planet earth, son….

  7. Why do I have to listen to Alejandro Moreno denigrate my team? Seriously, ESPN, I know that you want the Spanish-speaking market. And definitely, Colombia is the better team. But the diving, the dirty play, and Moreno excuses it — even approves of it. The subtext being that Americans are naive because we don’t embarrass ourselves by rolling around on the ground. Really, fuck that guy.

    • I agree. I think he said something like “you can’t blame the players for exaggerating trying to run out the game”. Yes. Yes you can. Its called flopping and its a yellow card. #14 should have had like 4 yellows for it

      • And he defended the one guy for being stretchered off because he had a cut on his face. What an embarrassment.

  8. Another Klinsman era failure. He picked this Herzog for the job and they failed. This team is horrible. So, they better off staying home eating McDonalds watching the better men play at the Olympics.

  9. Colombia has been the much better team this series and based on play deserves to advance but the referee this game has been god awful. Violent acts going unpunished. Inconsistent calls. Rampant diving. It didn’t affect the outcome but it still makes me angry

    • Objectively, like if I cared more about the olympics than the US U-23s, I’d want Colombia in the tournament. Especially after watching all of the kicking and stomping we’re doing. We got a lucky own goal, we should be down to 9-8 men, started off playing super negatively … no complaints from me about the result. Not even upset by it really. I was so sad and angry when we lost to Guatemala a few days ago, this result seems more than fair.

      • Whats frustrating is when we needed a goal we actually started playing, got it and then stopped playing again

      • jack,

we only “started playing” when colombia dropped back into their half for a breather. as soon as they gave up the own goal, they pushed forward and started giving us problems again. they were just way better than us.

    • he might have done better, but he can’t do much if the midfield can’t get him the ball. reminiscent of jozy’s struggles when he was forced to live off 4-5 long balls per half.

    • yeah, i’m used to our guys not being the greatest players in the world (or even the region), but we’ve never been the “dirty” team. i don’t like the constant flopping of the colombians, but it’s impossible for me to cheer for a team that deliberately stomps on opponents.

the ref was horrible–especially with gil’s second yellow–and not sending off acosta and parker were just two more of the mistakes he made.

  10. Of course you’re going to give up a goal eventually when you sit back in your own third. At least pressure in your own half. We were just letting them set up the attack in the first third of our half and I think that’s rarely if ever a good idea.

  11. I saw an article on ESPN. The fireklinsmann banner did fly over Columbus. Paid for by 1 person (the reddit guy i talked about in the other article). Hilarious. Hes got money to burn.
