No one in MLS had found a way to extinguish red-hot Real Salt Lake heading into Week 8, but the LA Galaxy concocted the perfect remedy.

The Galaxy handed Real Salt Lake its first loss of the season on Saturday by picking up a 5-2 victory at the StubHub Center. The impressive Western Conference win and the performance put forth by the Galaxy in it earned the club SBI MLS Team of the Week honors.

Real Salt Lake initially took the lead in the 16th minute of the game, but the Galaxy mustered up a quick response through Gyasi Zardes before the floodgates opened. The Galaxy scored three more goals before halftime, and added a fifth and final tally in second-half stoppage time.

While the Galaxy were the latest squad to take the SBI honors for MLS Team of the Week, they were not the only ones to stand out. The Colorado Rapids, Vancouver Whitecaps and Toronto FC all posted solid wins, and received honorable mention for the Week 8 accolade.

What do you think of the Galaxy winning SBI’s MLS Team of the Week award? How impressive was their 5-2 win over RSL? Would you have gone with another team like Toronto FC or the Rapids?

  1. Agree on Galaxy as team of the week, but give an honorable mention to NYRB. Yes, they benefited from another officiating head scratcher, but they finally looked like last season’s Red Bulls when they put up 3 goals in ten minutes.

  2. Some of this is due to a smart game plan by Coach Arena. To counteract RSL’s tactic of high pressure, he put in Boateng on the left instead of lletget and then had his players make long passes for Boateng and Zardes to run on to. RSL’s back line just couldn’t handle the speed of those two and that led to about 3 of the goals. You can’t teach pace and speed kills.

    • True statement regarding pace and speed..

Throw in the fact that both consistently made great runs..

Of course, great runs in America-speak is timing-measuring your teammates’ position and pass options then finding that open attacking spot to meet that potential pass

      Both did it well..

      Kudos to the winning side

    • Actually, Lleget suffered a knock in training and didn’t make the gameday roster.Llleget is fast, but not burning fast like Boateng, who was a sprinter in high school. But the tactics used were the same. Zardes is real fast and plays a lone forward or center-forward very well and with GDS situated under him, the plan was to knock down the “route one” balls to Boateng,GDS or Magee. Even better, because of Boateng’s speed, balls to the corners were equally as effective.

A few years ago, we had Beckham knockind balls down to Buddle and Donovan, the Keane and Donovan, when teams played high pressure.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
