Following a weekend of big wins for England’s top clubs and a massive loss for La Liga leader Barcelona, a few individuals and teams stood out among the rest. Here are SBI’s picks for the weekend’s best (as voted by SBI’s editorial staff):
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
HATEM BEN ARFA (OGC NICE). The French winger scored a hat trick to help Nice defeat Rennes, 3-0, and keep pace with Ligue 1’s best at the top of the table. The highlight of his three-goal game was a strong run down the middle of the field that was finished off with a powerful effort from outside the box.
Honorable Mention – Andy Carroll, Jamie Vardy
TEAM OF THE WEEK
TOTTENHAM. Pressure was on Tottenham as Leicester City earned yet another win on Saturday, but Spurs easily handled Manchester United, 3-0, to keep their English Premier League title hopes alive.
Honorable Mention – Real Sociedad, Atletico Madrid
MATCH OF THE WEEK
WEST HAM UNITED 3, ARSENAL 3. Two of the EPL’s top six teams collided at Boleyn Ground on Saturday, and fireworks went off. Arsenal jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but West Ham came back by way of Andy Carroll to hold a 3-2 advantage. Laurent Koscielny would score in the 70th minute, though, to salvage a draw.
Honorable Mention – Schalke 04 2 – 2 Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan 1 – 2 Juventus
GOAL OF THE WEEK
JAMES TAVERNIER (RANGERS FC). In Sunday’s Scottish Challenge Cup final, Tavernier fired in a 25-yard volley to help his club earn a 4-0 win over Peterhead.
Honorable Mention – Walter Ayovi
