Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

Luis-Suarez-Barcelona-Sporting-Gijon

La Liga’s championship will be decided on Saturday.

Barcelona enters the weekend in pole position, with a match with Granada the only thing standing between the club and its 24th title. A win would see Barcelona win the title, while a loss would open the door for Real Madrid to claim the trophy with a win over Deportivo.

The Bundesliga features a relegation battle as Eintracht Frankfurt, Werder Bremen and Stuttgart look to remain in the German top flight. In England, Derby County and Hull City collide as the two begin the road to the Premier League with their Championship playoff semifinal.

Elsewhere, a full complement of MLS and NASL action headline a busy evening slate.

  1. Not a good game for Dempsey tonight and Morris was pretty anonymous too. To be fair to those guys I have no idea what sigi is trying to get the sounders to do on offense.

  2. Castillo and Morales don’t play.
    Finlay comes off the bench.
Accosta on the bench for at least the first half.
FabJo still hurt and Jozy picking up an injury.
As good as last week looked for 40 man roster guys, this week is looking bad.

    • Menneh is still awaiting his citizenship (I think he gets it in Sept.). Hopefully by years end we’ll have some more options for striker & wide attackers. Hopefully between players getting healthy, young players maturing, and a couple new additions we won’t have as much concern when a player(s) have minor injuries.
Forwards: Jozy, Dempsey, Wood, Johannsson, Morris, Zardes, Rubin, Agudelo, Boyd
Wide Players: Fabian, Pulisic, Gyau, Menneh, Finlay, Lleget, Arriola, Green, Kiessewetter

A 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 really does appear to be in our future based on the attacking talent we’ll have if we can ever get everyone healthy.

      • I read an older article that said he may have to wait until late 2017 to meet the 5 year residence rule even after he gets citizenship. Zelalem got a waiver because his family’s move was not soccer related. Manneh moved for soccer, but not to play for the national team so its more complicated. Not sure if that issue has been resolved.

    • I was watching the Revs game and heard at half that it was his hamstring. With the Copa right around the corner the question becomes is he going to be sidelined? With the lack of forwards on the Preliminary Roster (Dempsey, Wood, Zardes, Morris, Wondo) his absence could be a problem as once again we really don’t have a replacement/backup for Jozy.

      • Wood, Zardes and Morris are all better options as a lone forward than anyone we had in Brazil anyway.

      • If we stick with the lineup we used in Columbus up front it makes no difference as Jozy was just subbed on. You have Morris can play on the right, Pulisic can play on the left and Wondo can sub in the middle. Finley didn’t even start tonight for Columbus, but if Jozy and FJ are both out he may still sneak a spot on potential.

      • Just checked the rules, FabJo and Jozy could be named in the 23 and replaced before the first game with someone else on the 40 man roster if need be.

    • Looks on the replays like he rolls his ankle on his plant foot. Where you watching in DLOA what were the trainers looking at?

  3. Yesterday Bob Bradley’s Le Havre came as close to promotion as they could possibly get. They improbably closed a six point GD, but the goals-for tie breaker sank them. Literally one more goal scored over the entire season — or one less conceded — would have seen them through. Rough.

  4. Not much excitement in Germany today, no Pulisic, FabJo still injured, Chandler relegation playoff bound, AJ still up but hurt, Morales didn’t play, Brooks in Europa qualifying next year.

  5. Is it true that the NE Revolution match is blacked out on CSNNE? This is the first time that I’ve ever seen a match blacked out and it coincides with Kamara’s debut.
