Will Johnson’s equalizer altered New York City FC’s plans to steal three points on the road Wednesday night at BMO Field.

Toronto FC drew 1-1 with NYCFC in the first of two matches this weekend. Kwadwo Poku recorded his first goal of the season, but Toronto pulled level as the first-half drew to a close.

The Ghanaian struck in the 16th minute with one of the most impressive goals so far this season. After creating separation from the defender on the left side of the field and at the edge of the box, he sent a shot into the far side netting. The goal was from a tough angle but left Toronto FC goalkeeper Clint Irwin with nothing to do but watch.

Will Johnson rarely gets on the scoresheet, but his equalizer in the 41st minute was the product of a quality cross from Tsubasa Endoh. The attacker’s lofted through ball left NYCFC’s backline out of sorts, giving Josh Williams room at the far post. The central defender slid to keep the ball in play and touched it to Johnson, who tapped home for his second goal of the season.

With the point, Toronto FC sits fourth in the Eastern Conference, while NYCFC holds first place in the conference. TFC will host Columbus Crew SC on Saturday, while NYCFC meets cross-river rival New York Red Bulls at Yankee Stadium.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Toronto FC was a little unlucky to not get all three points from this game. The team had seven shots on goal, but credit to NYCFC goalkeeper Josh Saunders for only conceding a single goal.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH

On a perfectly-threaded ball through the defense, Patrick Mullins should have done better with his finish on a shot in the 13th minute. Mullins would, however, record the assist on Poku’s goal just three minutes later.

MATCH TO FORGET

The reason NYCFC didn’t get the three points was because Toronto FC was able to equalize due to Williams being wide open at the back post for Endoh’s cross. NYCFC defender Ethan White, who left Williams free, will want this play back as Toronto FC were able to level the match just before half.
