Report: Hyndman set for Fulham exit this summer

Emerson Hyndman helped lead the way in a dismantling of Cuba, earning recognition as SBI U.S. Under-23 Men's National Team Man of the Match.

With some of Europe’s top teams reportedly seeking his services, U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder Emerson Hyndman could be on the move this summer.

According to ESPN FC, Hyndman has informed Fulham that he will be leaving the club when his contract expires in June.

Hyndman has been linked to several of the biggest clubs in Europe over recent months, including English Premier League sides Manchester United, Tottenham and West Ham.

The 20-year-old midfielder came up in the ranks of Fulham’s youth academy before joining the senior team back in 2014. Since then, Hyndman has made 27 appearances and added a goal in that span.

On the international level, Hyndman has progressed with the USMNT, appearing on multiple occasions for the Under-20, Under-23 and senior teams over the past two years. The young midfielder captained the U.S. U-20s at last year’s World Cup in New Zealand.

Where would you like to see Hyndman land? Will he break into the U.S. squad in the near future?

  1. I think he could be a good option for an upper mid table team. Perhaps Manchester U, as they tend to play some extra fixtures in Europa League.

  2. sorry guys, I think all of these transfer rumors are farts in empty rooms, likely placed by his agent. Just because ESPNFC lends them credence doesn’t make them true. Right now he needs minutes, wherever he can find them. I agree that Bundesliga would be a good fit.

I like Hyndman and think he is a solid prospect. He is solid technically and has excellent vision. My problem with him is that he drifts in and out of games and hasn’t shown that “bite” you’d like to see from a central midfielder. That lack of physicality gives me pause to whether he’ll ever break into the first team of a good club or the U.S nats for that matter. Here’s hoping he proves me wrong.

    • Played out wide a lot this season, probably for the reason you mentioned. At 20, you would hope he could put on some muscle and be a bit more physical.

    • Its his physicality that has been lacking… he needs to put on some weight based on the 2 summer tournaments I have seen him play in… but that is the ding on our entire U23 program… I mean, Zelalem has the same problem… and Julian and Trapp and I can’t remember, but I remember seeing us get physically manhandled by both Columbia and Serbia.

      • The Colombians are physically gifted for the same reasons the US dominates track events especially the shorter relays and sprints. I won’t get into that. The Serbians are just beastly because they are …just beastly. I have no explanation except that part of the world produces beefy dudes at a regular interval. The point is it makes sense for traditionally gifted athletic sides to give us problems. As we become more skilled and less reliant on workrate alone to grind out results, we will become a little smaller and more vulnerable to physical play. US players need to learn to dive and love doing it like so many other technical sides do. It is self defense against aggressive play from physical sides and it gets in the opponents heads.

      • I mean, I see what you are saying… but There is a balance that we haven’t found. Italy and the dutch play technically sound football. But they also produced Gattuso and Nigel “Karate Kid” de Jong. You need a mix and we don’t have that at the youth level, that I have seen. Also, its not like the US was Spain in those matchups… keeping the ball, possessing it, and getting kicked in the legs all game. Colombia and, to a lesser degree, Serbia had most of the possession too. So, Im not sure I buy your argument on this. I think we just need to bulk our kids up a bit.

  3. Budesliga seems like a good place, maybe Hertha or Mainz where he might get some Euro action off the bench.

  4. He needs to go somewhere that he’ll get consistent playing time with the first team. Doesn’t really matter if its in England, Germany, France, or Holland. I would prefer if he was a starter, but if he’s a bench guy or part of a rotation his first year with his new club that’s fine…..as long as he sees the field on a consistent basis.

  5. I think a move to a West Ham, Southampton or the like would be a fantastic move for him. Going to the Manu’s and Tottenham’s of the world would surely see him loaned out or on the bench regressing further his development when he needs to be playing consistently. This kid has the goods and if he makes the right decision could find himself a consistent player with the senior USMNT leading up to Russia

  6. Mid table team in a top flight league, or maybe a top 3 team in Holland just so long as he gets a lot of playing time.

  7. any top level league would be a good place to start then maybe a loan out just as long as he gets minutes
