For 22 teams, the dream of lifting the U.S. Open Cup will continue into the competition’s second round.

A total of 22 teams clinched a spot in next week’s second round of the 2016 U.S. Open Cup, which will take place May 18 and see professional teams introduced into the field. Of the 22 teams that clinched a spot yesterday, nine were from the Premier Development League (PDL), seven came from the Open Division and six from the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL).

Among the casualties were a pair of familiar U-23 teams, as the New York Red Bulls U-23s and Portland Timbers U-23 each fell. Meanwhile, Detroit City FC booked a spot on penalty kicks, while the Seattle Sounders U-23s also sealed advancement in extra time.

In total, the first round featured seven games that required more than 90 minutes, with two matches finishing in penalty kicks.

The second round will feature teams from the United Soccer League (USL), including first-place Louisville City FC, the Charlotte Independence and FC Cincinnati.
