For the first time in three appearances, the New York Cosmos’ U.S. Open Cup run appeared set to continue past the the Round of 16. However, a pair of New England Revolution stars ensured that the NASL contender would once again leave the tournament empty-handed.
Kei Kamara and Teal Bunbury scored in the game’s final 15 minutes, helping the Revs to erase a second half deficit en route to a 3-2 win at Belson Stadium. The win sends the Revs into the quarterfinal round, where they will take on the Philadelphia Union on July 19 or 20.
The Cosmos opened the scoring in the 38th minute through former New York Red Bull Ruben Bover, but the Revs climbed back into the match shortly after via a 43rd minute Bunbury goal, sending the two sides into the break level at one apiece.
Sebastián Guenzatti kickstarted the second half with a 53rd minute goal, giving the Cosmos a 2-1 lead heading down the stretch. After being introduced in the 61st minute, Kamara’s finish in the 75th minute pulled the Revs even before the former Columbus Crew forward set up Bunbury for his 83rd minute game-winner.
The Revs return to MLS play on Saturday with a visit to the Montreal Impact, while the Cosmos host Ottawa Fury FC that same day in the NASL Fall Season opener.
