Report: Messi to miss opening match against Chile

Leo Messi Argentina Chile 22

Argentina take on reigning Copa America champions Chile in their group opener on Monday night, but they will be doing so without their best player.

Lionel Messi will reportedly miss out on Argentina’s group stage opener against Chile, which is set to be played at Levi’s Stadium. Messi, who recently flew back to Spain to deal with an ongoing tax fraud trial, has been nursing a back injury he suffered in a pre-tournament friendly against Honduras.

Messi becomes just the latest superstar to miss time at the Copa America. His club teammate, Luis Suarez, missed out on Sunday’s clash with Mexico due to injury, while the third or Barcelona’s attacking trio, Neymar, is sitting out the tournament altogether ahead of the Olympics for Brazil.

Messi and Argentina are joined in Group D by Chile, Panama and Bolivia.

What do you make of Messi’s absence? How will Argentina fare without their star?

  1. In the future, when promoting soccer events just use the team names. It keeps your advertising from being fraudulent

  2. He’s in the US and will probably play by the final groups stage match. Bad for TV and casuals who are paying to watch him work his magic but not a huge blow. Mexico is the talk of the event right now.
