The 2016 Canadian Championship will be one team’s ticket to next season’s CONCACAF Champions League, but the two squads meeting on Tuesday have had different paths to the final.

The Vancouver Whitecaps and Toronto FC will meet in the first leg of this year’s Canadian Championship final on Tuesday, with both MLS sides looking to create early separation at BMO Field.

After capturing the 2015 edition of the tournament, the Whitecaps will look to repeat as champions, after battling back against the Ottawa Fury in the semifinals. Down 2-0 heading into the second leg, the Whitecaps scored three unanswered goals to propel them to the title match.

TFC had no such difficulty in their semifinals clash with the Montreal Impact, disposing of Didier Drogba and co., 4-2. Greg Vanney’s side did so without star attacker Sebastian Giovinco, who the team opted to rest for the majority of the two-legged affair.

The two teams will meet again for the second leg on June 29 at BC Place.
