After all of the build-up, the U.S. Men’s National Team’s road through the Copa America finally begins with Colombia on Friday night.
In the first match of this summer’s tournament, the USMNT hosts Colombia at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. To start the 100th anniversary of the tournament, Jurgen Klinsmann has selected a lineup causing little to no surprise, as Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey and Bobby Wood headline the USMNT XI.
Standing in their path will be a Colombia team currently ranked third in the world. Boasting an attacking unit led by James Rodriguez and Carlos Bacca, Colombia gives the USMNT its biggest test of the group stage in the first match of the tournament.
If you will be watching today’s match, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.
Enjoy the action.
What a #$@#$ mess…how is that a corner?
lol we can see the difference in talent. Their final 3rd is pretty good. Guzan working hard tonight
Yeah Bacca was a beast at Sevilla and now is at AC Milan.
Geoff Cameron’s worst game in recent memory.
I think it’s Wondo-time. We need to almost score two goals.
Get Dempsey outta of there. When are we ever going to give somebody else a shot at CF.
Jones with an “F-off.” to Klinsmann after the sub.
Totally agree with him, it should have been Dempsey out not Jones.
Down 2-0 you gotta take out Jones. I like Jones but we’re down by 2 goals. We need younger legs in there. I agree I would have subbed out Dempsey first.
Finally a long ball to create some width…
Time for Klinsi’s magic subs…
Shots on goal! woo!
Are we afraid of using any width?
Watching the runs, I think a large part of the tactics is being dictated with how often Dempsey is tracking back to the midfield to touch the ball (far too much for my liking). His positioning is almost a false-9 with how deep he gets.
As a result, our two wide players (Wood and Zardes) are pushing in tight.
Any idiots still willing to question Brooks heart, desire and passion for wearing the USA kit?
Why is Dempsey still in the game?
I only started watching just after the first goal, but I like our shape and movement, despite it being clear we are lacking in skill compared to our opponents. I think we should start every group game with this team and see what happens, bring in Nagbe and P-Sick in the the second. I honestly did not expect all of this doom and gloom on here. I’ll never cease being naive I guess, but I like it that way. I was pleased with our first half. No goals from the run of play from them, and we had some control on the edge of their box before making a bad touch. Clint was a foot away from 22 yard blast with his left. I’m digging it.
It won’t matter who they sub at this poit, these athletes in USMNT are all the same mediocre quality. One day one has a good game the next he sucks. And the almighty coach does not help a friggin bit.
USMNT looks like a toothless dog running around in circles. Lol.
Sounds like the streets of Mexico.
awwww snap
Zero shots on goal. This is so hard to watch.
Sidenote: Ives is apparently tweeting a version of live commentary, but not participating on Goal or SBI.
Serious question, has he all but given up on SBI?
I’d love to know, too. Perhaps Ives sold it to NASL?
Honestly, Ives is cool, and I wish he had more of a presence here, but this site has always been more about the comment section for me. This is my little dysfunctional community, Ives or no Ives.
All focused on handball but MB making crucial giveaway in very dangerous spot.
yeah I honestly put it just as much on Bradley as Yedlin, It’s his fault Yedlin is running back to get into position.
Bradleybhas had a number stink it up
Lol- that’ll teach Rodriquez to dive.
Another embarrassment for Klinsi.
Please put in nagbe. Jones has been sloppy with his passes. Had wood unmarked waiting for a chipped ball. He passed it right to the defender.
Bring on Nagbe for either Bedoya or Jones. The 3 man midfield is getting murdered on the counter and not producing anything on offense. Zardes was not ready to face elite teams like Colombia. Toothless attack, pointless possession.
I would bring in Nagbe as the first sub and see what happens after that.
Another embarrassment…so far.
Another embarrassment, so far.
How dare those players! Don’t they know they are playing with the best of the best, the number 1 soccer coach (in his own mind) in the world?
Wow we suck. Plain and simple. We’re not making it out of group play
Jones and Bedoya for Nagbe and Pulisic at some point?
Well, first half analysis: There’s a lot of big moths out there…or are they butterflies?
2 goals down and I’m not devastated…..maybe because I have the belief, base on the way we are playing, that this game is not over
Jones is lost out there.
He is still enough of an athlete to look good in MLS and probably will for years but his passing has been pretty poor so far.
After the first goal Colombia was more than happy to let us have the ball and wait for a counter.
It worked
I am not sure if the strategy worked or they were just lucky. Doesnt really matter. 2-0.sucks
Rob usually just says things with no reasoning, usually negative. Take what he says with a grain of salt.
US on the wrong end of 2 goals against run of play. Scoreline not a good reflection of the first half.
2-0 is still 2-0. I never felt like we were the better team in the first half.
Well i have not been happy with JK, but you cant blame the coach for your cb not markng on a corner and your rb handling tne ball in the box. Just STUPID play.
Also its a bad turn over from Bradley has Yedlin scrambling back into position there.
Agree in part: yeah, those lapses are on Cameron and Yedlin, but, Klinsmann hasn’t set up the squad to be successful in the opposing half.
Jones is at sea, blowing coverage and passes, Zardes isn’t generating much.
There needs to be more movement off the ball, more one-touch passing in the final third, and more rapid combination play in general.
We need Ngabe & Pulisic.
Jurgen has yet again not prepared the team to play.
Two goals against the run of play, US has been unlucky to have this scoreline.
Really harsh call,
Watched the replay and honestly it was a fair call, Yedlin’s arm was raised out.
I just hate those calls honestly. Unless the ball is clearly going to goal or you clearly swat at a cross or something a PK is just so harsh. Sure his arm was a little high but it was close to his body and clearly not deliberate. You pretty much have to play with your hands behind you back in the box, there’s no time to react.
I agree, I wished corrupt FIFA would instruct its refs to be consistent in their calls. I have seen this same handball not being called plenty of times.
We need to punch them the mouth.
We aren’t bunkering and had pretty good possession. Lacked that little something in the final third. What’s your assessment? And you’re right a bunch in the mouth would be ideal right now. No way this game deserves to be 2-0, but rob, you’re probably happy we are losing.
Why give a genuine assessments when you can just whine all the time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If you’re gonna turn your head away from an incoming cross, you’re going to want to put your hands at your sides.
34 minutes in and the final third for us is atrocious.
We dive too much
Outside of that set piece goal, we’ve been the better side. Liking what I’m seeing thus far, hoping we can show more cutting edge.
C’MON USA I haver you 1-1 in my quiniela, dont f*/-*it up
Colombia’s counter is quick.
What is up with the Moths?!
The audio is ahead of the action. Very annoying. That goal was called by Stone before it actually happened. Wtf FS1 you suck.
Cameron having a bad sequence with the run to set-up the corner and losing his man on the set-piece.
What no live commentary!!! FOR SHAME IVES, FOR SHAME!!!
Who?
Jones and Bedoya need to be good. We need SOME possession, at least some. We need to be clinical with our chances. Will probably only have a few of them.
Can’t argue with our starting XI.
All that yellow…looks like we’re the visitors. Hope we’re noisey.
That was my observation, too. Though, not surprising considering we’re playing South American teams in the States.
USA are used to being the “away” home team when playing Latin countries, but it’s still annoying and a reminder our sport still has a long way to go in this country.
Exactly my thoughts. Thought maybe we’d have a few more. Whatever. Fight on.
Yup, for all the progress we soccer fans have made in this country, we still have a way to go.
US wins 3-1. Wood with a brace. Clint with another.
Nope… Lol
Christmas present in June for many: Bradley as the #6 with the inclusion of Bedoya into the midfield alongside Jones.
That’s what people wanted, and that’s what they got.
Let’s see what they do with it.
Love Howard but I’m really pulling for Guzan to have a big game here. He’s waited for his turn like a real professional. Hope the D helps him a little more than villa. USA!
nope… lol
Nope what? You put the two goals on Guzan?
Lolz
