A Dom Dwyer brace and a strike from Jacob Peterson defeated a lifeless Seattle Sounders team Sunday afternoon at Children’s Mercy Park.
Sporting KC continued to creep toward playoff contention with the 3-0 win over the Sounders Sunday at Children’s Mercy Park. Dwyer’s first goal came in the second half along with a curler from Jacob Peterson. Dwyer struck again in the second half to take even more energy out of the Sounders.
By the 60-minute mark, the advantage had turned into a domination by Sporting KC. Seattle, which rested their starters in a midweek Open Cup loss to the LA Galaxy, only recorded one shot by the end of the match. Sporting KC fired 17 toward Stefan Frei’s goal.
In the 40th minute, Graham Zusi went down with an injury to his right leg. He was unable to continue and left the match for Connor Hallisey.
With the win, Sporting KC earns some valuable points toward playoff contention in the Western Conference. The Sounders slide further down in the Western Conference, now just one point ahead of last-place Houston Dynamo. The Sounders, however, have two or three games in hand on most teams.
Seattle moves on to face LA Galaxy on Sunday, July 31, in Seattle. Sporting KC will also play next July 31, at home against the Portland Timbers.
MAN OF THE MATCH
With two goals to his name, Dom Dwyer proved to be the best player on the pitch. He headed his first goal emphatically into the bottom right corner of the goal in the first half and placed his second goal cleanly into the goal past Stefan Frei later in the match.
MOMENT OF THE MATCH
The Sounders appeared completely out of this one when center defenders Zach Scott and Chad Marshall failed to communicate and allowed Dom Dwyer to charge onto a loose ball. Dwyer easily converted past Frei from short range to make it 3-0 in the 79th minute.
MATCH TO FORGET
Sounders star Clint Dempsey was practically non-existent in this game. He took few meaningful touches and struggled greatly to get any offense going for the Sounders.
