Orlando City’s head coaching search has reportedly seen the club turn towards one of the most recognizable faces on the MLS coaching scene.

FourFourTwo reported on Sunday that Orlando City is in advanced discussions with Jason Kreis to become the team’s next head coach. The move comes several weeks after the club fired longtime head coach Adrian Heath, who had been with the team since long before the club’s jump to MLS.

Kreis most recently took charge of fellow 2015 expansion side, New York City FC, but was dismissed from his job after just one season. Overall, Kreis went 10-17-7 in his lone season in charge of the club.

Prior to his time with NYCFC, Kreis led Real Salt Lake to a pair of MLS Cup appearances, while winning the league’s ultimate prize in 2009. Kreis led RSL to the postseason in each of his six full seasons as head coach.

Orlando City has amassed a 0-1-2 record under interim coach Bobby Murphy, most recently drawing, 2-2, with the Vancouver Whitecaps over the weekend. The Lions return to action on Saturday for a visit to the Columbus Crew.

What do you think of the report? How would Kreis fare with Orlando City? What other coaches should Orlando City take a look at?

  1. NOOOO. Has anyone else noticed the change in the USMNT since Kreis was added to the coaching staff??? We need him with the NATS.

  2. Yes Kreis is a good coach, but i wonder if this process is more about Jason interviewing OCL vs the other way around. He didn’t do wall at NYFC and at least one of the reasons for that was the front office was running player acquisition..Pirlo…etc. in an effort to make a splash instead of putting together a team that could win.

OCL’s front office over the last 2 years has meddled too much in the team.

Jason needs to be careful about jumping into the same frying pan.

i’m hoping his negotiating for control.

    • I love me some Kaka and he’s a classy guy, but does he necessarily fit the hard-pressing 4-3-3 that Kreis likes to play?

Kreis got saddled with some middies in Lampard and Pirlo who in no way fit what he did, and then NYCFC went and fired him…wildly unfair, on the face of it. But they wanted Star Power, and Kreis kind of fell victim to a situation where the players on his payroll were making 25 or 50 times what he was, which meant he was always going to be far less important to management than their prime investments.

I’d be leery of Orlando for much the same reason. They’ve been linked to some big names in the past besides Kaka, not the least of which was that mega-deal they tried to swing with Chicharito. Their ownership has…ambitions, which is great and their business, but it also may not be the best fit for a system guy like Kreis.

  3. This would be an interesting development. Kreis and Lagerway were some combination at RSL. Can Kreis succeed without Lagerway? Lagerway hasn’t lit it up in Seattle,….yet.

I suspect that if Kreis is given some time and resources he will do really well in Orlando.

  4. Kreis is a good coach, and Orlando could do a lot worse than hiring him. Orlando has some good pieces/players they just can’t seem to consistently put things together. If given enough time he could do well w/ Orlando….but would he be given the time if he takes the job?
